Hello everyone,

We are currently still in the comparison phase between two general contractors and are now trying to bring both to the same level.

Regarding cost estimates:

- Ceilings and walls fully covered with woodchip wallpaper
- Ceilings and walls fully covered with decorative quartz paint

Which should be estimated higher (materials + labor), and by approximately what percentage? This is so we can roughly estimate the costs in advance.

Thanks!

If it were up to me, I'd also like real gold faucets...
If I had gold faucets, I would unscrew them, melt them down, sell the material, and use a fraction of the proceeds to install something nicer.
Gold-colored faucets in a textured wallpaper house... maybe that will become a trend again sometime—

If someone doesn’t like that, fine. But please don’t speak badly about it for that reason.
Nobody is doing that. Fiberglass wallpaper had its time too. Had. It could come back. So could woodchip wallpaper. But right now, they’re simply not popular.

Textured wallpaper can be applied directly onto a wall prepped to Q2 level and it works fine.
That may be true, but the point is that it shouldn’t just be “applied” or simply “work,” it should look good. As @ypg mentioned, there was a period when glass fiber wallpaper was used, which was the easiest to install. In my opinion, that would still provide far more stylish design options than textured wallpaper.
Well... the original poster will look into it and then decide what’s best for them.

Not everything that’s trendy is also good.
That’s true, but it equally applies to everything that isn’t trendy.

Glass fiber wallpaper is actually very popular in our neighborhood right now.
Oops… I think it’s more popular when removing it rather than installing it, since hardly anyone seems to be putting up glass fiber wallpaper nowadays.

I’d rather stick with the tried-and-true textured wallpaper.
If that’s what you like, then it’s the right choice for you. That’s exactly how it should be.

Yeah, with the well-established Gelsenkirchen Baroque style, that’s certainly nice too!

To give a bit of credit to the often unpopular textured wallpaper: we also decided to go with it.
Reasons?
- paintable by hand for accent colors (a clear advantage over wallpaper, as it’s much easier)
- can be painted over multiple times (also better than wallpaper if you like to make changes)
- feels warm to the touch (compared to plaster)

The last point was really crucial for us. The first two points are, of course, also met by plaster, possibly even better. But plaster feels cool, harder, somewhat more distant to the touch.
It obviously fits perfectly with many modern styles, but we simply found textured wallpaper cozier.

To speak up a bit in favor of the often unpopular textured wallpaper (Raufaser): we decided to go with it too.
Reasons?
- can be painted over freely for color accents (plus compared to wallpaper, much easier)
- can be repainted multiple times (plus compared to wallpaper, if you like changes)
- feels warm to the touch (plus compared to plaster)

The last point was really crucial for us. The first two are, of course, also true for plaster—possibly even more so. But plaster feels cool, harder, somewhat more distant.

That’s exactly what it comes down to!!!
Painted plaster naturally has the disadvantage that the sand grains are always there, and removing them would be a bit of a mess and time-consuming. Currently, we have fleece with paint on it, but who knows what it will be in the future.
In the end, there isn’t one single advantage; you just need a bit of imagination or advice to make either option look great.
