ᐅ Rainwater Harvesting Cistern for Garden Irrigation – Which Pump Should I Use?

Greetings!

I am gradually starting to plan the garden irrigation for my soon-to-be-completed house. For now, I want to keep it simple and non-smart: a cistern (6,000 liters) is installed underground, and I plan to water the garden conventionally using a pump and garden hose. The farthest lawn area will be reachable with about 35 to 40 meters (115 to 130 feet) of hose length. The cistern is located at the lowest point, about 2.50 meters (8 feet) underground.

Now I am facing a confusing variety of possible pumps: suction pump, dirty water pump, submersible pump, garden pump, deep well pump... several thousand liters per hour, various pressure ratings in bar... Does anyone have good advice?

@pagoni2020 If you’re installing a new system, include the distribution lines and sprinklers or drip irrigation from the start...
You can always optimize the control system later. At worst, you can manage by simply reconnecting at first.
It will never be easier than with a new installation. The HDPE piping isn’t expensive.

My parents have the Integra Inox with a floating intake. Simple and reliable.

In my opinion, submersible/well pumps are more practical than suction pumps.

Better to use a proper well pump. The Invegra Inox models have insufficient pressure and flow rate if you want to set up an automatic irrigation system. Alternatively, it becomes more expensive because more zones are needed. For a garden hose connection, however, they are completely sufficient.

For our cistern, a submersible pump was recommended, but I never quite settled on the right model. Since the garden will only be landscaped next year, it’s not urgent yet, but I still want to get some advice here.

Which models (with integrated control) can you recommend? It should be able to supply two hose connections...

For example, a model from Tipp.
Do you only want to connect hoses?

We bought a complete system from Graf back then, including a cistern and a pump. I believe a ground connection was also included, but we never used it. When it was installed, our garden plan was not finalized yet, so we didn’t plan any irrigation system. Later, I asked if it could still be added, but it would have required digging quite deep for frost protection, which would have been a huge effort.

Now, we simply have a water tap in front of and behind the house, both fed by the cistern, with a hose reel holding 30m (98 feet) and 25m (82 feet) hoses next to each. It works well, and for me, watering the garden is a form of meditation.

However, we do have a small garden.
