Hello everyone!

Attached is the first floor plan of our house, especially the kitchen. Do you think it is too large, or are the walking distances too long? We are two parents with three small children. The kitchen will be slightly smaller. This means the utility room wall will be moved about 60cm (2 feet) into the kitchen to create a coat recess under the stairs. We would probably like a kitchen island as a workspace. Do you have any ideas? Another question: Would you keep the door to the utility room as it is, or would you move it into the kitchen? This would of course reduce storage space but provide direct access. ??

A large kitchen is always great!

You don’t need a door in the kitchen at all. Get rid of it—access only through the living area.

That’s how our kitchen was planned, including a cooking (half) island. On the backside, wall cabinets were placed on the floor, storing all the dishes inside.

For the larger layout, I would definitely go for an "aircraft carrier" style. It looks neat and organized, and you could theoretically still install a patio door between the kitchen island and the tall cabinets (to quickly grab herbs from the garden).

Nice idea, but my wife would actually prefer a window above the sink. We are a bit concerned that the kitchen might end up being too large.

I have a question about this. Generally, I prefer wall cabinets over base cabinets because they usually have nicer details. Is there a practical reason to distinguish between wall cabinets and base cabinets, or can they be swapped freely? If so, I would also use wall cabinets on the floor wherever possible. This is the first time I've read about someone doing this.

Are they interchangeable with all kitchen manufacturers? Honestly, I can’t say for sure. I think we had a Nobilia kitchen, and it definitely wasn’t a problem there. They fit perfectly – with glass doors and matching lighting.
