Hello everyone,

We want to build a level-access shower measuring 1 x 1.6m (3.3 x 5.25 ft) in the attic. Would you recommend a tileable shower tray (sources welcome) or having a tiled slope screed installed by a tiler?

Such a shower tray can easily cost around €700 without installation. I would assume that the sloped screed might be the more affordable option? (We don’t have a tiler yet, but we will start looking soon).

Thanks!

As the name suggests, a screed with slope is installed by the screed specialist. The companies I am working with do this at no extra cost and with high quality. This is definitely the most cost-effective solution and works well. I have done this in five houses over the last two times and had no complaints. Of course, a skilled tiler is needed for the finish.

Of course, any tiler can also do the screed for you... they would also do a sloped screed.

Please no!!! The tiler comes after the screed! The slope must already be in place at that point! Specifically, sloped SCREED. The screed installer needs to know this and construct it accordingly!!!

In our area, it is common to leave the shower area out of the screed. Afterwards, the tiler mixes a few bags of screed concrete, places a reinforcement mesh, and shapes it as needed. I've never heard of this method failing. It is definitely more cost-effective.
A few bags of screed (max. 50€)
Reinforcement mesh (10€)
2 hours of tiler work (100€)
So it is definitely cheaper than using a board.

Okay, learned something new again!
When I have the screed installed, everything is discussed beforehand and there are no extra costs. No bags, no storage, nothing on the side. Everything is done by a professional (for warranty reasons).
How many houses do you build each year?
