Hello everyone,

Today we started thinking about furnishing the hallway. The room is large but has many doors, so it’s not that simple.

Here is the floor plan. I hope I didn’t miss any important details. No tall cabinet can be placed in the top right corner. At least the upper part of the wall should remain easily accessible because the fuse box is hidden there. The heating circuit distributor is located in the lower part, but it doesn’t need to be accessed very often.

Floor plan hallway: front door, bathroom, light switches; doorways; access panels/fuse box.

What do we want to accommodate?
- Coat closet for 4 people long term
- Storage for shoes of 4 people
- Drawers for small items like scarves, hats, shoe care products, bags...
- Bench for sitting
- Mirror, preferably full-length

I’ve looked at various IKEA hacks for building something like this from Metod, Platsa, etc. It would be best if everything was from the same system to keep a uniform look, but IKEA is not a must.

My plan is to have a bench along the left wall, tall cabinets at the bottom right, and a chest of drawers at the top right. Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t like this because he thinks the space on the left is wasted. However, I don’t see how there could be much cabinet there without making the passage to the bathroom too narrow. He would prefer the chest of drawers closer to the front door to put keys and such down immediately.

Since we can’t agree, I need your help. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Living room with flat-screen TV on wooden shelf, speakers, and stack of firewood.
Just an idea… here used as a TV stand and firewood storage. You can design it however you like.

That looks really poor. Sorry.

@danixf Do Besta and Platsa have the same fronts?
Yes. I think there are different versions at least for the doors, but then the particle boards no longer fit.

Hehe... it’s an older model –
My intention was to move away from prefabricated, wall-unit–style furniture-store nightmares and to encourage some thinking about how you can create stylish pieces using plywood or colored/painted MDF. It’s important to know your own taste and design the pieces accordingly.
In my opinion, plywood and MDF are very suitable materials.
It’s similar to the kitchen area, where using some creativity you can get something nice that often costs well under €20,000–30,000.

I went through all the IKEA cabinets again. If it comes down to IKEA, I find the Metod cabinets the most suitable in terms of dimensions.
On the bottom right, three 60cm (24 inch) tall cabinets for jackets, and on the left, half-height wall-mounted cabinets as a sideboard. Unfortunately, I realized that a 2.40m (7 ft 10 in) long bench is a bit too much, and I don’t like the look of different cabinet heights there at all. Then, there would be space at the top right to build a seating bench from two 60cm (24 inch) low wall cabinets. That also doesn’t block the top flap and can be quickly pushed aside if you need to access below.

You can basically create a mix using Metod and Platsa, with a dresser at the bottom and a wall cabinet on top, giving you a place to store keys while still having plenty of storage space.

If you leave a bit of space (about 30cm (12 inches)?) next to the bathroom door on the left side, where there is the most continuous wall area, I think it works. The front door provides enough room so that you don’t immediately bump into the side of the cabinet. And then place the bench on the upper right side, as you suggested.
