Hello everyone,
We are just starting out and do not yet know what we want to build. So far, we have only visited prefabricated house providers using timber frame construction. We also tried Town & Country regarding solid or masonry houses, but they showed no interest at all.
What are your preferences? Why solid construction? Why timber?
Are there cost differences?
Which is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly?
Thank you very much in advance

In 2020, your blunt statement is simply incorrect and cannot be substantiated. I could have just as easily built timber frame or similar, and the house wouldn’t be any better or worse.
By the way... there are also good solid garden sheds.
We are still considering our options. However, timber frame construction is out for us. It doesn’t feel much like a wooden house anymore, since with most providers, the wooden part is basically just the frame. There is more insulation than wood in the house. This might be different with companies like Sonnleitner, where at least on the interior walls I can work with log beams.
Solid timber construction has already been mentioned. That is still interesting for us, but we are building a flat roof. And among structural engineers we know—even those specializing in wood construction—the tendency is to go with solid construction for flat roofs.
So for us, if it’s wood, then only solid timber. You can also play around with the walls to avoid being overwhelmed by wood. For example, the exterior walls (inside) can be exposed wood, and the interior walls, which are also made of solid wood, can be covered with drywall.
From all the discussions, we’ve only found that in the end, you can have all the disadvantages of wooden houses just as well in solid construction—compare sound insulation, for example.
Otherwise, the main points have already been made. In my view, there is no better or worse building style; those times are probably over. It really depends on the company doing the work, because even the most visually appealing solid construction can end up a ruin in the end...
