Hello everyone,
I was directed to this interesting sub-forum through other threads, and of course, I would like to share our idea pool in the form of Draft 2.0.
First, a few facts about us:
Both 32 years old, no children, working full time. Two children are planned, but only after the house is built and before 40. So, relatively mid-term.
We plan to build in the front yard (650 m² (7,000 sq ft)) of the builder’s parents. The plot is signed, and the partnership agreement is in place. We envision a single-family house of about 180 m² (1,940 sq ft) with a double garage. We do not want a basement.
The house should preferably meet the KfW55 energy efficiency standard despite having a gas heating system. As a guy, I obviously find KNX great, but maybe Somfy Smart Home would also work. However, I would really regret it in the future if I squander that investment.
The cube shown in the drawing, originally made of exposed concrete, has now been clad with Trespa panels. The window shutters should be external Venetian blinds (Raffstores) in the basement and regular shutters on the upper floor. A large covered terrace (not visible here) is also very important to us since we really want to sit in the garden sheltered from the weather.
Additionally, we face the challenge that the driveway is from the southwest side, so we need to combine garden and driveway.
A wood-burning fireplace is very important to the builder. The airlock/transition zone between garage and house, connecting both, is also essential. We like the idea of a shared but “separate” bathroom; a bathtub is not necessary. An additional third, basic bathroom in the garage for garden parties is also planned (we live in a rural area of Lower Saxony, where corn and beer are enjoyed every other day…) but should be kept very simple.
I will actively participate in the thread and look forward to an engaging discussion.
Best regards,
Phil12345

Once again, you’re losing a significant amount of floor area due to the straight staircase and a poorly planned mezzanine.
The somewhat open concept of integrating the staircase into the living space is undone by your sliding door.
Then there’s a 5m² (54ft²) dressing room with two (!) doors and a window.
It’s not like these criticisms are new. It might be like the saying “can’t see the forest for the trees.” Or simply part of an individual learning curve. Or maybe you’re not really sure what you want and end up trying to copy someone else’s house instead of designing your own.

phil123456 Jun 2020 16:54I have come to realize that I am probably not a natural space planner.
But I am not giving up on finding a suitable plan.
Plot: Access from the southwest.
Gable entrance on the west side.
Upper floor: 2 children’s rooms, master bedroom with private bathroom and walk-in closet, children’s bathroom.
Ground floor: Kitchen, preferably semi-open, living room, dining room, with a fireplace ideally positioned exactly between these two rooms, home office, utility/technical room, and a guest bathroom without a shower.
Carport/garage with storage for tools.
We do not want access to the living/dining area only through the kitchen, so we need a hallway connection.
I am really at my wits’ end and am considering scrapping the whole project.

I am starting to realize that I am probably not a natural at spatial planning. How do you know that? – So far, you’ve only tweaked two external designs (from Katja and Bien-Zenker), and you haven’t shown us any personal learning outcomes yet. Bien-Zenker does have nice floor plans. I pointed out two approaches for you: A) follow what was explained to you or B) oppose the suggested methodology and explain why. Both can lead to the same goal, whether you imitate or critically reflect. But not reflecting at all won’t bring any learning progress. There are two paths, and you’re not taking either – so what are you here for?https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/

phil123456 Jun 2020 18:12You are answering your own question. I’m not showing any learning curve and just tweaking others’ designs. I basically have no problem with that. The tone is just quite blunt.
Why am I here? To find a proper floor plan that covers our wishes and isn’t a disaster. An architect doesn’t study their field for years without reason. I come from a completely different industry.
Maybe this forum is more for professionals who prefer to stick among themselves. It might be better to remove me from here.
Otherwise, I will take another shot at explaining why I like certain things. The origin of phil’s golden corner cut. Loosely based on Mies.
