Hello everyone,

I would appreciate some critical feedback on my kitchen layout.
Attached are rendered images and the floor plan of the living and dining area.

The goal was a modern kitchen without a high-end focus for a two-person household.
The color is light gray and the countertop is matte granite in a cloudy anthracite tone.
I definitely want to keep my side-by-side refrigerator, even though the next one will probably be a French door model.
The dishwasher is located in the lower left under the oven (which includes a steam function).

The island measures 2.00 x 1.00 meters (6 ft 7 in x 3 ft 3 in). The distance between the kitchen row and the island is about 1 meter (3 ft 3 in).
The initial design sketch showed a wider island, but we adjusted it on site because it would have been too bulky.

I wouldn’t rely too much on the opinion of the kitchen salesperson. There are certainly some bad apples who will tell you whatever you want to hear just to make a sale.

The cooktop should definitely be positioned asymmetrically on the island—preferably in a 100cm (39 inch) cabinet either all the way to the right or left.

By that I mean a 100cm (39 inch) cabinet with about 15 to 20cm (6 to 8 inches) of space toward the edge, depending on the cooktop width, followed by a 60cm (24 inch) or 40cm (16 inch) cabinet.

A base cabinet with a waste sorting system—I prefer it next to the sink because that’s my main workspace.

Walkway distance... I have about 90cm (35 inches). You don’t need 120cm (47 inches) to open drawers facing each other at the same time since the drawers are only about 50cm (20 inches) deep. Also, you need to consider how often you actually do that.
I would rather plan the island depth to be at least 110cm (43 inches), so you can have standard-depth pull-out base cabinets on the kitchen side and reduced-depth pull-out base cabinets by about 10cm (4 inches) on the island’s backside.

I think a side-by-side refrigerator looks better in a tall cabinet wall when it is built in with pantry cabinets on both the right and left sides, for example.

Liebherr offers a fridge/freezer combination ICBNi3386 with an ice maker (including water connection) integrated into the freezer cabinet. There are also the integrated models ECBN5066 (76cm/30 inch wide) and ECBN5256 (91cm/36 inch wide).

What I mean is ... a 100cm (39 inch) cabinet, leaving 15 to 20cm (6 to 8 inches) space towards the edge, depending on the cooktop width, then the cooktop. And then a 60cm/40cm (24 inch/16 inch) cabinet.

Understood.

If that’s the reason why more than 1m (39 inches) is often recommended, I agree. I can’t quite judge the necessary clearance yet,

Okay, I understand. But here that’s not really possible, I would say? Oven and coffee machine stacked on top of each other wouldn’t look good either.

During our online research, we frequently came across 1.20 meters (4 feet) as a practical distance. Our kitchen planner automatically used 1.20 meters (4 feet) without consulting us. We recreated this spacing with chairs in our current kitchen and found it comfortable. It also allows one person to stand at the sink (counter run) and another at the stove (island) without getting in each other’s way—if the space is available...

120 cm (47 inches) is a recommended standard measurement that generally works well. However, in practice, other solutions may also be possible. This depends on how much space you want to have in the living area, among other factors.

Additionally, a distance of 90 to 100 cm (35 to 39 inches) between opposite countertops with a sink and cooktop is quite practical because it allows you to turn halfway and reach the other side easily. It is also advisable not to position the cooktop and sink directly opposite each other but slightly offset to the side. All of this can be found in more detail in the forum mentioned multiple times, along with many practical kitchen designs for a variety of room types, which are illustrated with photos. Just check the gallery and user reports in the completed kitchens section. (Google is a great friend)

In the end, every kitchen needs to be designed based on individual usage patterns. Normally, anyone planning to build a kitchen should already have experience with one. We approached the topic by considering what we do not want, based on what annoys us from our experiences, and what we need, based on our habitual movements in the kitchen.

This approach, for example, led us to realize that we never want a handleless kitchen again.
