ᐅ Patio Roof, Polycarbonate or Glass Roof, Under-Glass Awning?!

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I started a thread about covering our terrace. We have now decided against a simple awning and want a fixed roof covering the entire area from the bay window to the other side of the house, about 7.60 meters (25 feet) wide and 4 meters (13 feet) deep. The terrace, which will be built in two weeks as part of the landscaping, will be the same size.

We are still unsure whether to go for a glass roof with an under-roof awning or a higher-quality polycarbonate (PC) roof, possibly without the under-roof awning. The downside of the latter option is that less light passes through and it could be noisy in the rain due to the hollow chamber design. The advantage is a significant cost saving compared to glass.

We are also wondering: when looking out from the dining room through the central floor-to-ceiling window (see picture), will we see an unattractive yellow-green roof at some point if we choose the PC? Has anyone had experience with this? The second picture shows the kind of look we would like for the roof covering, with a side wedge window on the right because a larch privacy screen will be installed underneath on the side.

Do you have any advice or tips?

Thanks!

Best regards

What do you consider an “enormous” cost saving? Our patio roof, made with 1cm (0.4 inch) thick glass and a glass side wedge on one side, including installation, cost about 5000 euros (without awnings). The dimensions are 5.70 x 4 meters (18.7 x 13.1 feet). I don’t find that very expensive.

Our patio roof, made with 10mm (0.4 inch) thick glass and a glass side panel on one side, including installation, cost about 5,000 euros (without awnings). The dimensions are 5.70 x 4 m (18.7 x 13.1 ft), so I don’t find that very expensive.

Best regards,
Sabine

So far, our quotes for 7.60 x 4 m (24.9 x 13.1 ft) with an awning range between 11,000 and 17,000 euros.

I don’t know how it is with complete packages, but in self-construction the difference between glass and twin-wall polycarbonate sheets was really irrelevant. I paid €39/m² (approximately $39/ft²) for the glass (2*5mm laminated safety glass). However, I would strongly recommend glass; I wouldn’t want a roofing made of twin-wall polycarbonate sheets.

Hello

Definitely 9mm (3/8 inch) VGA glass.
I am currently working on my patio roof.
Background: 9 by 3 meters (30 by 10 feet). Solid aluminum profiles. Wall thickness over 3mm (1/8 inch). Including structural calculations.
I checked with the usual suppliers.
Quotes ranged from 16,000 to 24,000 euros.
Then I went to a profile manufacturer. They offered me a kit (completely pre-cut except for the 3 supports) and delivery to my home, plus the contact details of a glazier. Price: just under 7,000 euros (including glass). Installation by recommended installers would cost about 2,000 euros.
I am installing it myself. For one, I’m trying to save money, and secondly, I can do it better. But it will also take longer.

We have now also decided on glass. Thickness 8mm (5/16 inch).
We are paying 9,000 euros for two roofing sections, one 4 x 4 meters (13 x 13 feet), and one 1.75 x 3.5 meters (5.7 x 11.5 feet) with an under-glass awning on the 4 x 4, no installation included. That is really very reasonable.
We have aluminum profiles in RAL 7016.

I’m glad we ultimately chose glass.
