ᐅ Damage to uPVC windows

Good morning everyone,

We have anthracite-colored vinyl-clad uPVC windows on the outside.
Since our contractors behaved like bull in a china shop (their exact words: “This is a construction site, it’s normal to have damage on the uPVC windows and glass! Uh, yeah. We could really lose it”), we ended up with quite a few damages to our uPVC windows.

Inside, there are many scratches on the frames, cuts in the plastic, and three windows are scratched. On the outside, our windows are anthracite vinyl-clad. In many places, the vinyl cladding is so damaged that the white uPVC underneath is visible.

Does anyone have any experience with this, especially regarding damaged vinyl cladding?
I have already searched online and found that there are companies that can reapply vinyl cladding on site.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much
Best regards
Katja

How could something like this have been prevented?
Basically, it can’t if you have careless people on the construction site. The frames themselves already come with a protective film. You can also buy a protective film for the glass.
But if someone steps on the frames or bangs on the windows with heavy equipment, there’s nothing you can do.

BUT: Such behavior on the construction site is not the norm.

We chose the trades that were recommended to us by our architect. He has been working with them for a long time. I can’t say that we always went for the cheapest options – honestly, that’s not the case.

The shell construction, drywall, and interior and exterior plastering are being handled by one company with subcontractors. This is also the company responsible for most of the damage caused.

The issue with the bitumen and the roofer still needs to be resolved. Our architect is taking care of it.

Is it possible to provide some kind of impact protection? I imagine something like a cable protector bridge...

In that case, you’re really powerless. Probably no scratches would remain but rather actual damage (breakage), which no one could then claim was there beforehand.
And for anything that would cause a scratch without protective foam, wouldn’t such foam offer some level of protection?

With the shell construction company, as I mentioned earlier, you can clearly tell that they just don’t care at all if there is any damage anywhere. It’s a construction site, that’s just how it is, they told us. According to them, we were just being picky and overreacting.

They also left the outside area extremely messy with food leftovers and other rubbish. I’m relieved once the drywall work is finished and I don’t have to see any of them there anymore. Honestly, you can only say they were really sloppy.

Unfortunately, this matches my experience with most (but not all!) tradespeople. Drunk on the construction site, leaving behind piles of trash, working only during scheduled hours, and never thinking for themselves. In my experience, tradespeople earn too much money for the poor quality of work they often deliver.

I’m glad I don’t have to deal with them anymore and now do almost everything myself. It’s cheaper and of much better quality. And this comes from a “trained engineer” who is often laughed at by tradespeople for being clumsy...

Here, too, pictures say more than a thousand words.
