Hello everyone,

According to our building contract, the exterior window sills will be made of aluminum. For an additional cost, it is also possible to get granite window sills. I have always been against aluminum window sills because I am worried that you will constantly hear the rain hitting the aluminum.

What have your experiences been, or what did you install?

I agree that good quality materials should be used – but assuming that ’87 refers to your birth year, I don’t share the view that the current house will also be your last one built. This "principle" applied back when reaching an 80th birthday was rare and only widowed or abandoned people remarried for a second time.

That was the last house ☝️

Double swear? That’s what you’re saying now. But once it’s paid off and the dog is literally buried, a colleague of your own age then invites you to his newly built, soon-to-be retirement home (still with fresh memories of the cousin’s stairlift renovation stress). At that point, you really have to be especially “strong-willed” to stand by that bold statement you made back on Mother’s Day 2020.

Hello everyone,
I need to bother you once again.
The granite window sills on the exterior... when are they usually installed and who typically does this?
Is it before or after the insulation?
We are getting 18cm (7 inches) of insulation, the wall is 17.5cm (7 inches) thick.
The fact is that we are getting these sills, and now I need to schedule when they should be on site and installed.

I only know it "before" the insulation. An 18 cm (7 inches) external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) also means that the window sills will cantilever most of their depth. There must be a suitable fixing for that, which I honestly can’t quite imagine how it would work "afterwards."

To be honest: if you had mentioned the wall structure beforehand, I would have advised against the heavy sills.

After insulation and before plastering.

The wall structure doesn’t really matter, don’t let that confuse you. The window sill is supported on the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) using a fastening system, so it’s not a problem at all.

It’s best to just ask the trades involved how they handle it. Window sills usually come from the local stonemason, who also installs them. For aluminum types, the window installer usually does it, but you can also ask them if they have a partner they work with.
