ᐅ Decentralized ventilation – various manufacturers

Hello everyone,

My husband and I are currently building a house. After much consideration, we have decided to install a decentralized ventilation system (we definitely did not want a centralized ventilation system). Since the electricians are on site right now, it would make sense to have the wiring installed at the same time. However, we don’t want to rush into this and prefer to take a closer look into the topic first.

There are still so many unanswered questions... So I thought I’d register on this website and try my luck in this forum. I hope you can help me.

We were recommended companies like Senertec, Maico, Viessmann, and Dimplex. Has anyone had experience with decentralized ventilation systems from these manufacturers (quality, maintenance, can you notice the air exchange?, are these ventilations noisy, etc.)?

I was told we should choose honeycomb fans. Why? What are the advantages compared to other types of fans?

Today, I already called the heating contractor to ask if he could provide a quote and what price we should expect. He said about 10,000 euros for 4 fans! Isn’t that a bit expensive?

I hope you can help me out a bit.

Best regards
Yours, Nikolaus

Hello,

Those are only rated power values! You have to relate the energy consumption to the achieved air quality.

A typical general contractor tactic. They want to push you towards their preferred solution, not yours. This difference roughly equals the cost of a central controlled residential ventilation system for a single-family home.

I would doubt that just looking at it will help much.

Correct, nominal power ratings are what manufacturers of central systems provide. With a central system, the air also has to be pushed through all the ducts, which obviously consumes a significant amount of energy. That’s why I’ve been wondering whether decentralized systems are really less efficient in terms of electricity consumption...

I understand completely; many contractors try similar tactics. I am in the second round of tendering, as no contractor from the first round matched my expectations. I will inspect the system today to clarify one concern I have, specifically about the noise level.

Regarding the discussion about air exchange rate, I only have one question myself: Does it fulfill its purpose adequately or not? I don’t want to operate a ventilation system just for its own sake. It should simply ventilate my house and, if possible, handle energy reasonably gently. The problem is that there are so few independent tests or user reports. And user reports generally praise whatever they currently use or have purchased. But that’s true for everything...

More likely "exhaust"

Correct, what expectations do you have regarding bias of any kind?

Hi!

I’ve taken a look (and listened) to these devices. From a technical standpoint, I don’t think they are bad and they certainly have their advantages. However, they are not suitable for me because I simply don’t like the acoustics. Therefore, I will probably have to bite the bullet and spend more money.

Hello Nikolaus, a well-designed decentralized ventilation system with heat recovery (according to indoor ventilation standard DIN 1946-6) is definitely a good alternative to a central ventilation system. These units are easy to clean individually. They provide 100% hygiene assurance! Bathrooms should have exhaust air controlled by humidity sensors, and the kitchen should also have an exhaust system (not an exhaust hood, as it produces too much airflow—creating negative pressure risks and being inefficient in terms of energy use—leading to heat loss). An exhaust fan with a capacity of 80 m³/h (about 47 CFM), combined with a good recirculating hood, is the best solution here. The electricity consumption of these systems is very low, with power draw around 1 to a maximum of 4 watts per unit, usually operating at 12 volts. Filters should be replaced twice a year, or more often if contamination is higher. The cost is approximately €2 (around $2) per filter. The unit should be cleaned once a year before the heating season starts. Best regards, HIGIL

Hello,

a friend of mine introduced me to decentralized residential ventilation. It is the "Ambientika" system from the company Südwind.

Has anyone had any experience with it?

Thank you very much for your replies.

Best regards
