Hello from the north,
we have been offered a quite interesting plot of land. The seller demolished an old house on this property but left the basement floor slab at a depth of about 3 meters (10 feet).
We do not want to build with a basement. Will this floor slab cause any problems for us? Does the old slab need to be removed? Should we possibly consider a special foundation?
Thank you very much in advance for your answers.
Best regards
Henrik

Do you want to build exactly over that spot?

No, the house will be larger and only partially built over.

I would check this with the house construction company. It might depend on how the concrete slab is designed.
In some areas, we built over the walls of the old slurry pit. About 50cm (20 inches) of recycled material was placed on top, followed by the construction of the concrete slab.

I don’t see a major problem there at first. The hole with the slab will be filled and compacted.

So the basement slab is now below ground level, and the area above it has been backfilled? – try sketching this out: the outline of the planned house, the basement slab, and the excavation pit from the demolition. In principle, this doesn’t sound immediately concerning, but the information is still a bit limited. Does the seller have any photos from the demolition that he can share with you?
Who even does this and why – for example, did his children plan to build there but then gave up (because the desired house design wasn’t possible or something like that)?
