Hello everyone,
There is a thread about the company KD Canopies. In that thread, the low costs are often praised. On their website, you can see indicative prices of several thousand euros, for example, just under 3,000 EUR for a 300 x 400 cm (10 x 13 ft) canopy.
Now I noticed on a well-known coupon site that has also been selling all kinds of miscellaneous items for some time, a terrace canopy "Melanie" for 800 EUR.
You don’t need to talk me out of it right now, since a terrace canopy won’t be an issue for me until at least next year. But could you please tell me what the disadvantages are and calmly explain with facts the differences that lead to such a significant price gap?
By the way, they also offer an aluminum carport for 880 EUR...
Thanks and regards
Tolentino

Honestly, does that thing look like it will last 20 years to you? And yes, that’s what it’s supposed to do. I won’t drill holes in my facade only to have to replace the canopy after 3-5 years and drill even more holes. That’s something my grandpa might do with his garden shed, but not on a single-family house.
Everything is already stated above! The forces acting on such a structure are considerable. My neighbor installed a similar canopy from the same type of manufacturer by himself. Now, after just 1 year, parts of it are detaching from the house wall. Also, I assume you won’t find a professional who will install it with a warranty on their work.
I don’t expect the canopy to be watertight against the wall when it rains, nor between the panels. So, in the worst case, you simply can’t sit underneath when it rains. Then the water runs straight down without a gutter and over the years will erode or damage whatever is underneath at the front.
The distribution costs at KD also cause expenses; even if you, as a customer, buy the canopy without installation, these are partially cross-subsidized. You can see this when comparing specialist dealers to pure online/direct sellers.

Hello tolentino
At the beginning of last year, I was also ready to get myself a patio roof.
8 x 3 meters (26 x 10 feet). Attached to the house, with safety glass.
The quotes ranged from 16,000 to 24,000 euros. Including installation.
Through a friend, I got in touch with a company that manufactures the profiles in Germany. They did the structural calculations for the roof and cut and delivered the profiles precisely. I got the glass through a glazier who works with them. Total cost: just under 7,000 euros. I had to install it myself.
They also arrange professional installers. That costs 1,600 euros.
And that is quality. This will outlast me.

Still, people spend 3000 EUR on an amplifier for reasons very similar to those you mentioned above and are completely convinced that it’s necessary. Because they can. Plain and simple.
But to support the good answer from @Zaba12:
When it comes to my house, I now choose quality. Because if you buy cheap, you buy twice. Speaking from experience!
If I put something out back in the garden, then it’s decoration.
Your flapping part might serve its purpose at the back near the vegetable bed, but attached to the house it reduces its value.
And when after three years it’s completely faded, the fabric worn out after just one year, the panels become dull or didn’t hold up to the snow load, then you end up with two ugly holes in the wall and the hassle starts all over again.
But do whatever you want! You got the answers to your question on page 1.
Leaks and snow load are additional factors.

Guys, I’m a bit surprised at how quickly the tone here turns negative just because some commonly accepted opinions are being questioned.
I’m not saying I absolutely want to spend only 800 EUR.
I’ve simply had experience in other areas where you don’t necessarily have to spend much more money to make functional purchases.
Many people spend a lot because they believe they are buying better performance, but in reality, that’s often not the case, or the increase in performance is much smaller than generally assumed—unless you’re talking about improving status or prestige.
For example, in audio electronics, clothing, cars, or luxury items (I can taste a difference between a 60 and a 250 EUR whiskey, but it would never be worth an extra 190 EUR to me).
There’s no need to take this questioning personally; it’s better to see it as a challenge to convince with arguments and facts(!).
I’m not questioning your choices, I just want to understand the basis on which you made them.
Experience reports like this are very useful and helpful.
Also, comparison offers and side-by-side assessments of the scope of services.
I also take the notes about water tightness, the missing gutter, and snow loads as given and accept them as facts, as the thinner polycarbonate sheet is already obvious from the descriptions. I’d be interested to know what effect that actually has.
“Custom-made” is a great analogy! Thanks.
I’ll probably revisit this question in a year, but thanks already for the contributions.
Good luck

Well, if 700 EUR is the benchmark, it’ll probably be hard to get a custom-made solution from a tradesperson.
