Hello dear forum,

we have light/white spots on our anthracite-colored uPVC windows that, in my opinion, come from the plastering. Although everything was carefully masked and covered, there are spots on almost every window frame. We have tried everything from water to all-purpose cleaner. The spots keep reappearing after they dry. As mentioned, we are not sure if they really come from the plaster, since some are located in places that were 100% masked off. Do you have any ideas or tips on how to deal with this?

So they seem to disappear when damp?

Maybe residue from the adhesive, such as from tape.

This doesn’t only apply to this situation but generally, there are two main types of adhesives.

- One type is alcohol-soluble, which can usually be removed with common cleaning agents like glass cleaner or similar products.

- The other type is oil-soluble. You can try rubbing a bit of butter on your finger, apply it to the residue, wait briefly, and then wipe it off with warm water or a damp cloth.

Maybe this can help others as well. I wasn’t aware of the oil-soluble type before, and it has already helped me multiple times with adhesive residues on glass and other surfaces.

We had exactly the same issue, even worse on one window, and it was caused by the plastering. Although it was masked off, some plaster still managed to get on the frame. After cleaning, the stains disappeared while the surface was still wet, and once it fully dried, it looked just like before. We informed the window installer, who told us that the manufacturer has a special cleaning solution for this and that he would come to apply it. He then cleaned the window frames with this product, and it worked perfectly—the frames looked like new afterward, and even after more than two years, there is no discoloration. We were initially worried that the protective film on the windows might have been damaged or faded, but fortunately, everything came off without any issues.

Best regards,
Sabine

Thank you for your responses.
I just don’t understand why the stains don’t appear where we clearly wiped off the plaster. The stains are only where the plasterers cleaned...

Thanks @Curly for the tip! We have already been in contact with the window installer. He gave us cleaning agents, but they didn’t help. I’ll tell him to get in touch with GAYKO directly.

Which manufacturer are your windows from, and what was the product called?
