Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

So, for example, we keep the toaster and the soda maker in our pantry because I didn’t want them cluttering the countertops. Since the pantry is right next to the kitchen, we use both appliances just like before, when they were on the counter. Our stand mixer is left out in the open because it looks quite nice. However, I don’t really use it more often—only for what it’s needed for (baking, grinding nuts, etc.).

Our kitchen was installed yesterday and today.

Considering the small dimensions the kitchen offered (3.00m x 3.00m (9.8 ft x 9.8 ft)), I think our kitchen studio managed to create surprisingly a lot of storage space!

I like the niche to the left of the stove. One of the most important features in the kitchen: a hidden corner that’s out of sight but quickly accessible for everything stored there.

Edit: I also like the rest.

Except for the wall: what kind of wall is that outside?

That’s still the unrendered garage of our neighbors, built right on the property line.

It’s an unfortunate situation, but oh well. The picture looks worse than it really is. In reality, you can see past it. Still annoying to me.

It turned out unfortunate, but oh well. The photo looks worse than it actually is. In reality, you can see past it. Still bothers me though.

If it gets rendered, everything will be fine. Just plant a nice shrub in front and put two chairs underneath—that should do the trick.

Fortunately, our kitchen is being installed today as well.
