ᐅ Topping-out ceremony in the context of COVID-19

Hello everyone,

Our topping-out ceremony is coming up in about two weeks. Given the current COVID-19 situation, it’s clear that we will celebrate only with the construction workers, our new neighbors, and our parents. However, it doesn’t feel right not to show some appreciation to the shell builders, who have done an excellent job. Maybe a nicely packaged “worker’s lunch bag” handed to the site supervisor for distribution? Should we inform the neighbors that the celebration will be postponed, or is it better not to mention it at all? What are your thoughts on this? How would you hold a potential topping-out ceremony in these times?

Thanks to all!

Best regards,
T. Liederbach

Not for a long time... they don’t come anymore.
When they ARE there (not come), an envelope is appropriate. No food.

@ TE, you really don’t have to do anything if the contractors aren’t doing anything either.
They only do it if a topping-out ceremony is planned. In that case, it’s basically an additional service from them, with your envelope then being the fee.

Tradespeople usually receive an envelope with some cash at the topping-out ceremony.
Well, not here anyway. It’s a celebration that’s simply part of the tradition!

Just skip it.
You can celebrate your move-in with neighbors, family, and friends. Tradespeople appreciate a bonus more.

There is never any harm in saying thank you. Whether it’s included in an envelope or attached to a bottle or something similar depends on personal preference. Just a couple of sentences expressing that you would have liked to toast with them at a topping-out ceremony as thanks for their good work should make any tradesperson happy.

When it comes to family and neighbors, I would probably only mention it if you happen to be writing or calling them anyway, or if they ask. Giving a definite statement that it will be made up for at an unspecified time—or maybe not at all—seems a bit strange to me.

But not anymore for the tradespeople. They finish work at 2 p.m. and still have to drive an hour back to the company. They voluntarily shift it by one hour. Their saying on the roof beam is "leisure"... and the builder gives them some extra cash for that!

In times of C. just reschedule. There are other days to celebrate.
