Hello,

We are starting our house construction in 2 weeks, and since we don’t build a house every couple of years, my wife and I wanted to find out about the current customs regarding the upcoming Topping-Out Ceremony!

Does anyone here from the area have experience with this? What do I need to organize?

Best regards
The Mahnke family

Hi,

Although I’m not from the area, in our case the carpenter gave a short speech and a traditional topping-out ceremony toast.

Afterwards, there was a small celebration (until around 2:30 a.m.) with the companies involved so far, the future neighbors, family, and friends.

Organizationally, you basically only need to provide seating, food (we had cooked and grilled sausages), and drinks (important: spirits for the topping-out toast!). Maybe some light background music as well.

For the food, many people also brought small contributions (salads, finger food, etc.).

Best regards
Sebastian

Yes, we have already done the calculations... when friends, family, and craftsmen come... as well as neighbors... ayyy, we quickly reach 80-100 people... hahaha, okay, I’ll call the fire department and ask about a tent.

S-H, GU: We haven't done anything. The contractors erect the roof frame every day; they weren't really motivated anyway. And since we don't like celebrations, we gladly accepted that.

Well, we are actually looking forward to it. If the tradespeople aren’t interested, then it will just be the joy, family, and neighbors.

Our neighbors and craftsmen were very happy. There were drinks and some food from the grill. The topping-out ceremony is about saying thank you – the recipients are the craftsmen (thanks for their work) and the neighbors (thanks for their patience with noise and traffic). Therefore, friends, family, and acquaintances are not the typical audience – they come to the housewarming party.

The topping-out ceremony started on a Friday at 3:00 p.m. and lasted into the evening until it got too cold.

That’s why I asked the carpenters in advance. They were very pleased, as apparently traditional topping-out ceremonies are becoming rarer. The recommendation for the date came from them. Everyone identified with our construction and was happy to attend – but in our case, they built the entire house, not just the roof frame. Maybe it also makes a difference whether you work with a general contractor or hire locally yourself.
