ᐅ Door frame does not fit / no sound insulation

Hello everyone,

The interior doors have been installed in our new house. The measurements were taken before the tiler came. The walls were then tiled up to halfway, which meant that the door frame no longer fit because it was too narrow. The installer planed part of the door jamb but couldn’t go further due to stability concerns.

Now we have a large gap between the door frame and the wall. This is a disaster in terms of soundproofing, and any door installed would have the same problem. The company refuses to replace it, saying the fault lies with us. Regardless of who is to blame, I will take care of it myself.

How can I improve the sound insulation? Should I install a joint seal profile and seal it with silicone (see pictures)? Additionally, should I foam the entire area with expanding foam or something similar?

We simply didn’t tile the walls in the bathroom at all; it actually looks better that way. Plus, you avoid that issue altogether.

I want to bring this topic back up.

Would it generally be beneficial to fill all door frames with insulation wool? I still have quite a bit left over. It shouldn’t cause any harm, right?

Just put it in. There are also foam options.

However, I doubt that the gap is the main cause if you are bothered by the shower noise.

To provide some feedback here as well:

I have now insulated 4 door frames and conducted a very amateur test (using a CD player and a decibel app). Adding silicone seals probably won’t make much difference anymore.

- Two rooms are about 3 dB quieter
- One room is the same
- One room is about 5 dB louder

I once read that a 5 dB reduction feels like a 10 dB difference. Let’s see if it makes any noticeable impact in everyday life.

Stuffing cotton wool in your ears also feels quieter.

Putting cotton wool in your ears also seems to muffle the noise.

Some people already have cotton wool in their heads, so they can skip this step.
