Hello everyone,

Does anyone have experience with pellet heating systems? I am interested in the initial purchase and ongoing operating costs, as well as practical handling experiences.

Thanks in advance.

@wrobel Thanks, what is the pellet consumption, and how much storage space do I need to plan for? Are the pellets delivered in bags?

Hello again

We need about 2 metric tons of bagged material. The heated area is approximately 145m² (1,560 sq ft) of living space with ceiling heights up to 3.5m (11.5 ft) at around 25°C (77°F), plus about 70m² (750 sq ft) of garage space.

Storage area 80 x 120 cm (31.5 x 47 inches) for two deliveries

Not necessarily, pellets can also be delivered by tanker truck and blown into storage tanks. Higher initial investment, but lower operating costs.

This year, a decision needs to be made ...

What will be heated with this system? Or rather, how much heat do you need?
Is it a new build or an older building? Which heating system do you have (radiators or underfloor/area heating)?

Pellet heating systems are relatively expensive to purchase. They tend to have a more complex setup. You need a storage area for the pellets and a delivery system (screw conveyor or pneumatic transport). The price of pellets, and therefore the maintenance costs, are not very cheap at the moment. You will need a chimney sweep to certify everything and to regularly perform inspections.
Depending on the source of your pellets, their sustainability can vary.
I wouldn’t even consider using pellets in bags. Generally, they are far too expensive (small packaging), produce a lot of plastic waste, and require more effort. Usually, pellets are delivered by truck to fill the storage.

What makes you lean toward pellets?

In an uninsulated older building, I can somewhat understand this choice. For a new build, a pellet heating system would never be an option for me.

I know two people who have one. Both are generally quite satisfied. One of them experiences occasional minor to moderate problems.
But both say that the initial investment was quite high, and the ongoing costs are at least not cheaper than with another heating system.

This is a single-family house built in the 1970s, constructed using a prefabricated timber frame method, without insulation. Approximately 150 m² (1,615 sq ft) of living space. Currently heated with oil. The occupants want a new heating system and, for whatever reasons, they prefer pellets. Since I have no experience with pellet heating (I only know the argument that it is expensive), I asked around to find out the pros and cons.
