NicoleSch.21 Sep 2012 08:19Good morning,
I came across this forum and hope someone can help me a bit.
We are planning an extension and need a strip foundation.
It should have a total length of 21m (69 feet), 80cm (31 inches) deep, 40cm (16 inches) wide, and 25cm (10 inches) above ground level, with standard reinforcement.
Since the extension is located at the back of the garden, either a concrete pump would need to be used or the mixer truck would park on the side street, with the hose running through our hedge, and the concrete would be transported by wheelbarrow.
This is also how a contractor who has submitted a quote to us plans to do it.
He wants 2700 euros plus VAT for this foundation.
He said this is quite reasonable for us because he would let us provide the materials ourselves, charging only 10% of the material cost for procuring and delivering it.
The price seems quite high to us. Unfortunately, we have no points of comparison yet; we will receive a second offer on Monday.
What do you think? Does this sound about right?
Thanks for your answers.
Best regards,
Nicole

Hello,
Has this been calculated and approved by a structural engineer?
Is it a formwork foundation? Then that would really be a good price. Otherwise, the conditions are not known. If he has to place the concrete with a wheelbarrow, of course that costs effort and time.

NicoleSch.21 Sep 2012 11:52Hi,
thanks for your reply.
The dimensions were provided to us by the structural engineer and architect.
Yes, the foundation needs to be shuttered.
Then the price really seems reasonable. Unfortunately, we don’t have many comparisons.
But it’s good to know that at least.
Yes, it definitely requires strength, but using a concrete pump would probably increase the cost significantly. Since the mixer has to wait that long until they finish, they charge 150 euros. That seems fair, doesn’t it?

Nicole
