When it comes to kitchen exhaust/recirculation systems, opinions vary widely.
Keywords like thermal bridge, replacement air (supply air), wall duct, negative pressure, controlled residential ventilation bypass do not make the topic any less complex.
I would like to hear first-hand experiences from homeowners here.
- Who has controlled residential ventilation along with kitchen exhaust?
- Who has kitchen exhaust with separate supply air (possibly also through a wall duct)?
- Wall ducts apparently withstand a blower door test, but how do they perform regarding possible thermal bridges?
- Who has opted for recirculation instead of exhaust, and why?
- How is the odor situation, especially in an open kitchen?

Hello, I read the thread with interest because we are currently in the middle of planning our kitchen.
The kitchen is just under 18m2 (194 sq ft), with a finished ceiling height of 2.85m (9 ft 4 in), KfW55 standard but no central ventilation.
We also want a recirculating hood.
The hood will be installed over an island with a 90cm (35 in) gas cooktop.
Right now, I’m trying to decide whether a chimney hood, a suspended hood, or even a ceiling-mounted hood would be best.
What would work with the ceiling height, be effective, and not look too ugly (a large drywall installation hanging from the ceiling is not ideal either)...
I would like to hear about 2 or 3 models that could do a good job.
When I browse Novy’s website, I get confused because I don’t see anything with 1000 cubic meters per hour, only max 600 to 700 cubic meters per hour, which is probably too low.
We don’t need a designer model for $5000, I just want something that works well.

It produces 850 cubic meters per hour on boost mode and the calendar on the wall flutters. We have a 120cm (47 inch) hood over a 75cm + 30cm (30 inch + 12 inch) cooktop.
The boost produces 850m³ (30,020 cubic feet), and the calendar on the wall is flapping. We have a 120cm (47 inch) hood over a 75 + 30cm (30 + 12 inch) cooktop.
