Hello everyone!

We are currently renovating a 60-year-old detached house with the help of an architect/designer. Everything is being updated to the latest standards, and some changes are being made.

Our current issue is the staircase (see photo). It has stone steps, which we don’t really like or just find outdated. Our architect suggested the option of applying a coating, and we visited a showroom today, but we weren’t really convinced by it either (no wood look, everything was very sleek and reminded us more of offices or commercial spaces). Our idea was actually a wooden staircase (meaning wooden handrails and wooden steps). If the stone steps are removed, everything would need to be leveled and repaired before wooden boards could be installed on top, which we assume would be quite expensive.

Does anyone have another idea? I look forward to any suggestions.

Bright entrance area with stairs going up, grey steps, red handrail on the right, and open door.

Well, since the cloakroom is probably located upstairs after the staircase, many street shoes will be going up and down there. Therefore, I would recommend choosing something low-maintenance. Wood is not very suitable for that.
What kind of look or style does the rest of the house have? More rustic-cozy or modern-minimalist, etc.?

In my opinion, this is another case where the effectiveness and value of what already exists are underestimated. From here, much of it looks like granite. I would consider the walls more in need of improvement; I would probably only clean the floor. But if you don’t like it: What is your budget?

Yes, that’s true again. You walk up this half-landing with shoes on before reaching the cloakroom. The rest is also rather wood-heavy and cozy. I was thinking maybe wood-look tiles? Is it possible to lay them over the stone? The stairwell then goes up two more floors, but we don’t want anything too “cold” there.

Yes, the walls you can see here currently have stripped wallpaper, so they will still be renovated.
I find the stone looks cold and rather uninviting, which is what we actually wanted to change. I didn’t mean to remove it completely, but maybe there are similar ideas like coatings that we just don’t know about yet.

That would probably look like it was trying too hard and not succeeding. Remove the stones and replace them with boards, cover the riser according to taste with wood or white panels. It doesn’t cost a fortune, even less with DIY.
