Hello everyone,

I’m curious to know what items you might have removed from your house building and furnishing list after the initial enthusiasm wore off. Was it perhaps the electric blinds, the smart home system, the fireplace, a particular room, or other things?

If you removed anything, it would be interesting to know why. And for those who have already completed their build... did you regret any of these changes?

Thank you!

Even during the material selection, we didn’t even look at more expensive or more attractive bricks, doors, faucets, etc.

Admirable—if you don’t awaken the enemy of good, it can’t tempt you!

We basically crossed out everything we had pinned or liked about six months earlier—before detailed planning and budgeting—on Pinterest, Houzz, and similar sites.

Open gallery, fireplace, bay window, extension, projecting facades, flush doors, and so on—you name it.

Regarding the fence again. A welded wire fence is currently being considered. Although we don’t find it particularly attractive, financially it’s a completely different level compared to a nice WPC privacy screen.

As for ivy or any other climbing plant, we are concerned that it could cause issues with the neighbors. Ivy doesn’t know where its boundary is and happily grows in all directions...

So far, the outdoor hot tub has been crossed out... although the conduits are in place... maybe it will be installed after all someday.

Not exactly "crossed out," but: if I were to build it again, I would make it one row of bricks wider.

Why not talk to your neighbor? Maybe they prefer ivy to WPC or something else. Then they might be more willing to use hedge trimmers and cut back any overgrowth. That’s what I do. Any excess ground cover or ivy is simply trimmed back and that’s it.

As mentioned, ivy can become a curse. It can even lift roofs on garden sheds, and so on. You have to be very disciplined when trimming it.

There are three neighbors. A church-run kindergarten and two who, like us, have not yet built.
One is very nice. The other is quite difficult. He has already given us a hard time regarding an easement granted to him on our property. We actually want to avoid doing anything that he could somehow interfere with.
