Hello everyone,

before I start creating something myself in Excel – I’m sure I’m not the first amateur planning and building a house! – I’d like to ask the community if anyone has recommendations or templates for a construction schedule and cost tracking.

I was thinking of something like the attachment. I appreciate any advice. How did you approach it?

I’m also willing to pay for software, but no more than €100 (about $110).

Best regards and Happy New Year to all!

But that also means you all did it yourselves and didn’t use any templates from the internet?

Yes. When I create something myself in Excel, I make sure I understand all the relationships on an abstract level. I find this process valuable. Of course, it helps if you are reasonably fluent in Excel.

I strongly advise against using ready-made software. They often have too many unnecessary features, and what you really need is missing or you don’t know how to use it. Instead, you end up wasting time learning something useless.

I use the following system:
- Excel spreadsheets for finances, invoices, and cost overview
- Digital calendar for all appointments
- Digital address book with contacts
- Scanning all documents as PDFs
- Clipboards organized by topics with to-dos and other documents needed on the construction site.

I synchronize calendar, contacts, and documents via Nextcloud across all devices, so I always have everything available on the go, at home, especially at work, and through the cloud on any PC. Properly entering contacts, documents, etc., is time-consuming and takes some getting used to at first, but it’s worth it. This way, I’m fully ready whether at home, on the road, on the construction site, or especially at work.

(Unfortunately, even the best system is useless if the contractors simply don’t return calls or if you have to wait weeks for a quote.)

Via smartphone, right?
How do you handle Excel and invoices? Looking forward to any info/examples.
Best regards and a happy 2020

I only use the smartphone for calls or to view PDF files if there’s no computer nearby. Otherwise, I do everything on computers.
I enter invoice amounts manually into Excel.
