I need to decide on the appearance and materials for the staircase. It’s a double quarter-turn staircase in a terraced house, connecting the ground floor to the upper floor. Are there any “no-go’s” or some tried-and-true tips for this type of staircase?
The staircase will be enclosed and built over a WC and some storage space.
Now I have to choose between various types of handrails and how they are installed, the materials (beech or something else), and the colors (it can be painted in any color).
My main concern is that the staircase doesn’t look bulky in the hallway and appears somewhat elegant or visually pleasing. Is that easier to achieve with vertical balusters or with ones that run parallel to the staircase?
Are there any basic design rules (like “dark walls make the space look smaller” or “white clothing makes you look bigger”)?
I know it’s really a small detail. Choosing the staircase has been the hardest part so far.

goalkeeper19 Dec 2019 07:59We are also currently building a terraced house and I can share the following with you:
We wanted something stylish and visually appealing as well. However, our staircase is a half-turn design with a storage room beneath it on the ground floor. Unfortunately, you can barely see much of the staircase—only the first few steps at most.
Our staircase contractor strongly advised against a steel stringer staircase. We are now getting a Treppenmeister Viva with white risers (see picture or search online). The balusters will be made of stainless steel. You generally don’t need a more elaborate staircase in a terraced house.
I wouldn’t necessarily paint the stairwell in color but keep it white. You might also want to consider lighting (at foot level or on the wall).

why?For him, that wouldn’t be a proper staircase. It has to be made of wood. Not very clear.
We had the Viva included in the construction contract anyway, so it didn’t matter to us.

But in the end, it’s just “chatter,” as we say. You are of course right about that.
