So, the structural engineering takes about 2 to 3 days of work for a single-family house. I would consider anything over 1500 euros more like a rip-off rather than undervaluing the work time.

500 euros per day for a freelancer is not as much as it sounds. Even some hairdressers earn that amount. A painting company, charging 60 euros per hour, is often just breaking even.

And they don’t have to be liable for personal injury, life, and six-figure sums!

It depends on the house. A townhouse from a catalog is manageable, but formwork and reinforcement plans don’t draw themselves. Coordination is sometimes necessary as well...

For a custom-designed house that goes beyond just four walls and a roof, you can forget about finishing it in 2-3 days—unless you don’t care and just write a DIN A4 page with general assumptions.

The HOAI fee isn’t there for no reason, and even that is actually too low. For a 200m² (2,150 sq ft) single-family house with three corners and five edges, the fee is about €25,000.

We paid 2320 euros for a fully custom-designed architect’s house (160 m² (1720 sq ft) living area + double garage).

A structural engineer can, of course, always use general assumptions and therefore design larger dimensions than would actually be necessary with precise calculations. This approach makes the structural design faster and cheaper, but the costs will be considerably higher due to the additional beams, load-bearing walls, and increased reinforcement steel.
