ᐅ Two external blinds or fingerprint scanners – which would you choose?

Hello,
we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.
We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:
- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).
We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

Quick question since we recently discussed this at home... What happens to the fingerprint lock during a power outage? Will I be standing in front of a locked door? Some models have a backup battery that allows the door to be opened during a power outage. Alternatively, you can keep a mechanical key as a backup.Pamiko schrieb:
According to the plans, both windows are 1.01 m (3.3 feet) wide and 2.40 m (7.9 feet) high. Behind them is the staircase.
Is it really possible to do without a wind sensor for the external venetian blinds? It costs over €300 here. In principle, you can always do without the wind sensor. It’s just a question of whether you want to take that risk. The blinds are approved up to wind force X. If anything breaks, the dealer’s warranty covers it. From wind force 8 upwards, that counts as a storm and is covered by the building insurance. The range in between is your risk—that’s what the wind sensor is for. With these small blinds and their location on the ground floor, I would skip it unless you’re in a very exposed area. Many neighbors here don’t have wind sensors at all, even with huge sizes.

Have a motorized lock installed in the door and prepare for an external fingerprint scanner. An automatic lock with an electric opener is enough. For $1200 it probably won’t even include a motorized lock. If the lock is already there anyway, adding a fingerprint reader is only about $500 more. I wouldn’t stop short of that investment.

An electric strike with an automatic lock is sufficient. For €1200, a motorized lock is unlikely included.
If you already have the lock, it’s only about €500 more to add the fingerprint reader. I wouldn’t stop short at that point.
Keys? Yes, exactly, keys. But you don’t carry those when you have a fingerprint system, right? Otherwise, I wouldn’t need that if I still always have to carry a key... Think about it first.

In this case, I would also go for the external venetian blinds. They are simply invaluable for south-facing orientations.
A wind sensor is overrated. I don’t have one either, and it has always worked out fine so far. When a storm is forecast, I lower them proactively. Otherwise, they can definitely handle a bit of wind.
A fingerprint scanner on the front door sounds tempting, but when I see neighbors standing at their door struggling with 5 attempts before it opens, it loses its appeal.
