Hello,
I received the DWG file with our floor plans from my architect and would now like to import it into a program to create a suitable 3D model. There are several free options available, but so far I haven’t found one that allows me to import the DWG file and then generate the corresponding 3D model.
The software needs to be compatible with a Mac.
Has anyone here dealt with this topic before?
Regards,
Fabsta

Autodesk Viewer appears to be universally accessible online via a browser [ after registration ]
about the DWG format itself:
Drawing (DWG) is a design data format and graphic technology developed by Autodesk. It is suitable for tasks such as drawing, modeling, rendering, annotating, or measuring. Since the DWG file format is integrated into most Autodesk software applications, it is considered the native data format of the CAD software AutoCAD

Yes, it works. I can open the file. But it is just a 2D floor plan.
Now I am looking for a program where I can import all this data and then convert it into a 3D model.
If the DWG file is not drawn in 3D, you will have to rebuild everything anyway. In that case, you might as well use any other program (SketchUp, Sweet Home 3D, etc.) and just input the dimensions manually.
Or simply install a trial version of AutoCAD and hope you can learn it quickly enough before it expires.
(I still can't master it after 9 months, but I hate AutoCAD like the plague...)

With SketchUp, you get 30 days of the Pro version features, which notably includes the ability to import .dwg files. You still have to redraw everything, but the advantage of importing is that all measurements are precisely accurate.
Alternatively, you can use Autodesk DWG TrueView. This is a free viewer that allows you to measure everything and then redraw it in a program of your choice.
This helped me a lot because I was able to redraw the plot using the surveyor’s data down to the millimeter (isn’t a simple rectangle).
