Hello everyone,

I have a dream: someday I want to build a castle myself... a truly beautiful medieval-style castle.

To practice, I would like to start small at first... with a 70m2 (750 square feet) building.

I can hardly find any information about this... maybe I’m using the wrong search terms... does anyone have experience with this or know what I should be looking for?

Thank you very much!

First of all, you need to find a state that approves castles as new constructions.

Find an architect and a plot of land.

With Section 34 insertion requirement, it becomes interesting to find the appropriate neighborhood.

I have seen new-build houses in castle style in Austria; online, you can find Wagner Projekt GmbH related to this. However, I could imagine this being very costly!

Two newly built castles in Upper Austria: above, a stone castle with arches; below, a castle on a hill.

If I understand you correctly, you want to build using medieval construction methods, right? For residential buildings, complying with energy-saving regulations and the corresponding heating technology will certainly not be possible, at least not in Germany. You might have better chances if it is planned not as a residential house but rather as a garden pavilion.

Are you familiar with the Guédelon project in France?

Yes, in Austria, such projects are probably easier to carry out. Try looking up Ansitz Achenfeld in Kundl/Tyrol... On the edge of town, but surrounded by “regular” residential houses.

Preserving existing castles is already expensive enough to impoverish noble families, so used properties probably aren’t too costly. But what do you actually mean—what makes a "castle" to you? The drawbridge, the well, freezing in the latrine tower while using the moat as a toilet, the dungeon where intruders become skeletons...? Be honest: you just want to impress the castle ladies.
