Hello,

we are still at the very beginning of our planning. However, I have always found gas fireplaces very attractive and also practical. In our floor plan, it would also fit well as a room divider.

The main reason for choosing one would be the cozy atmosphere it creates, not the heating aspect.

When comparing gas fireplaces and wood-burning fireplaces, I personally see more advantages with a gas fireplace!

However, considering today’s context (discussion about CO2 taxes, KfW subsidies, etc.), it seems wiser not to rely on a gas boiler but rather on a heat pump, which we would currently prefer over a gas boiler.

On the other hand, it would be quite costly to install a gas line just for a gas fireplace.

I am currently quite conflicted because a wood-burning fireplace is not really a great alternative for us.

Has anyone been in the same situation? How did you decide? Are there any helpful tips?

Thanks in advance.

Have you considered a gas cylinder? It’s affordable and easy to set up. With the money saved from not installing a gas line, your children could even supply the fireplace with bottled gas.

Not an option, as I don’t want to keep exchanging gas cylinders all the time... in winter, one usually runs for many hours daily.

Does it really, or doesn’t it get too warm at some point?
The average consumption at partial load will be about 40 hours per 11 kg (24 lbs) cylinder. So a trip to the hardware store every two weeks (or every four weeks if you have two cylinders). And that’s stressful? Sorry, I don’t understand.

We only have gas for the stove. You just have to accept that people might give you funny looks because of that. ...

Two years ago, we switched from a wood-burning fireplace to a gas fireplace, and we are very happy with it. Our wood-burning fireplace would have lost its certification in 2020 (or was it 2021?), and since we were renovating our living room, it was a case of now or never!

For us, the gas fireplace has several advantages: no more complicated or expensive wood supply—thinking of my parents in the Eifel region, who are entitled to one tree per year from the forest ranger—no mess from ash disposal, and the curtains, windows, and wallpaper don’t turn gray as quickly anymore. Most importantly, there is the immediate warmth and cozy atmosphere; it’s definitely worth turning on the stove for an hour in the evening on weekdays, which we never did with the wood fireplace.

However, the considerable initial investment costs should not be underestimated.
