I am going to build a new house of about 150m² (1,615 ft²) and I have a difficult decision to make. I was offered the following options for heating:
1. Vaillant gas condensing boiler compact unit + solar thermal system + decentralized ventilation with heat recovery
or
2. Rotex 8kW air source heat pump + ventilation WITHOUT heat recovery and without solar thermal system
Both options are apparently almost the same price. I might even save money with the heat pump because I don’t need a gas connection. How would you decide?
At the moment, I am leaning towards the air source heat pump. Would that be the right choice?

Actually, it’s simple. Rotex is junk and very noisy. I would avoid it. The same goes for decentralized ventilation—trust me, better not.
If you need to save money, go for gas and solar thermal. If possible, add a central controlled residential ventilation system, but only for comfort reasons.
And this recommendation comes from me, who has been reasonably satisfied with my air-to-water heat pump so far. I only chose it because we can’t have gas.

same decision-making -
Photovoltaics will be included if the budget allows in the end; conduit pipes and meter space will definitely be planned in advance.
Whether this will be the right approach in 20 years remains to be seen. My parents relied on cheap night electricity and electric storage heaters back then – and regretted it.
- no gas, therefore heat pump
- no horizontal ground collector due to granite in the soil
- heat pump and ventilation systems separated
- air-to-water heat pump will be from IDM
- central controlled residential ventilation with enthalpy exchanger and heat recovery from Zehnder

So, even if you choose the wrong one, it won’t be a major mistake. It often comes down to gut feeling. I would also keep climate change in mind, but not in terms of it getting warmer every year. You still need a good heating system in winter.
