Hello everyone,

building on our floor plan planning, we would now like to focus on the terrace and a suitable roofing solution.

For now, we have planned the terrace with a width of 8.65 meters (28 ft 4 in) and a depth of 3.50 meters (11 ft 6 in).
But does the terrace really need to be this wide?

We want to add a roof over the terrace. Ideally, it should at least cover the large window front so that the roof can provide indirect shading for the living room, without having to lower the blinds all the time.
It probably also makes sense to extend the roof to the garage area so you can sit there comfortably, right?

Do you have any ideas for us?

Our terrace measures 7m by 4m (23 ft by 13 ft). The roof covering is 6m by 7m (20 ft by 23 ft), and we are very pleased with it and enjoy the added value.

The main reason for the patio roof was to allow several people to sit comfortably outside during the summer (the terrace faces south) without having to set up five sun umbrellas. Especially since we and our circle of friends all have small children, having shade is very important!

We also have a roof-mounted awning and three vertical awnings. Such a patio roof is quite expensive, but it was worth it to us.

A patio depth of 3.5m (11.5 ft) might also work, but 4m (13 ft) is more comfortable. However, it ultimately depends on the intended use.

Is the roofed area larger than the patio in one direction?

We have a 4.5 m x 7 m (15 ft x 23 ft) canopy, including an under-roof awning and vertical blinds. However, we could have almost done without the vertical blinds, as the 4.5 m (15 ft) deep under-roof awning is enough to keep everyone sitting at the table shaded in summer.

With children, having such a large shaded area is priceless, especially during those intense sunny periods. At 40°C (104°F), they even prefer to stay under the shade in the paddling pool rather than being in the full sun. We spent a year dealing with the hassle of sun umbrellas, which was too annoying for me.

Oops… typo. I meant 6m x 4m (20ft x 13ft)… 6m x 7m (20ft x 23ft) would already be the size of a double carport…

What do you mean by that? Sitting under a patio roof doesn’t count as sitting outside for you?
It’s different whether you’re sitting in the open or under a roof.

I’m just saying: everyone has to decide for themselves.
When eating, I do like @Müllerin.
For sunbathing, preferably topless.
Our roof is made of reed mats and provides more of a cozy atmosphere than actual protection.
It’s also not positioned above the patio door because I like to see the sky from inside. That wouldn’t be possible with a roof.
I would only consider a patio roof for the furniture and decorations, but it’s not cost-effective.

You can see the sky through your windows but not through a glass roof... Interesting
