We are currently planning to install floor tiles (gray/"moon" porcelain stoneware with a subtle concrete look) on the walls as well, at least in the guest bathroom. We have two questions and would appreciate your opinions:
- The floor tiles will be 60x60cm (24x24 inches). Should the wall tiles be 30x60cm (12x24 inches) or also 60x60cm (24x24 inches)?
- The default grout color is silver gray for the walls and cement gray for the floor. Is this common practice even when using the same tiles (as we have been told), or do people usually use the same grout color for both? If so, which one? Should it be darker or lighter than the tile?
Thanks and best regards

hemali200310 Jul 2019 11:29We have the same color. If it were different, I would use light gray grout for the floor and darker grout for the walls, since in our case the floor grout has darkened. But it doesn’t bother us at all.
There is no standard approach here. The grout is applied according to the customer’s preference, or you simply tell the tiler to keep everything as usual with the tile color.
Our tiler asked us several times how we wanted it to be sure.
We have wood-look tiles.
- The grout is gray.
- The silicone joint matches the tile color.
- The top skirting joint is white where all the walls are white.
The fireplace grout is gray; here the painter mixed the silicone color.

Is there a general rule of thumb regarding the sizes?
Is there a general rule of thumb regarding the sizes?
For what purpose? For the baseboard or for the joints?
Here, too, whatever the customer decides is done. My tiler installs a 7cm (3 inches) baseboard height. We wanted 6cm (2.5 inches). He had clients who wanted 10cm (4 inches).
Joint widths vary depending on the tile. For rectified tiles, 2–3mm (0.08–0.12 inches) is possible. This is also the minimum.
