It would be great if some of you could share pictures of your terraces. With so many options available, it can be difficult to make a decision.

What materials and colors did you choose, and why? What has your experience been like after 5 years or more? How large is your terrace? What did you pay for it? Have you incorporated any features such as umbrella stands, raised garden beds, or similar elements? Did you do the work yourselves? Do you know any reliable suppliers for materials that you would recommend? What would you do differently next time?

There are surely many other homeowners who would appreciate photos and tips. Thanks in advance!

Laid on gravel and swept in with sand... Oh man. Then gravel and tamped down tightly... True professionals

Thanks for the tip about the drainage; I will bring it up tomorrow.

Regarding "tightly packed": Well, what can I say, there seem to be enough experts around here. We have spoken with several civil engineers, tile/floor installers, and the manufacturer, and this approach is by no means unusual. Even online research shows that it is quite common.

Anyway, I thought this thread was called "Show us your patios," not "let’s criticize everyone’s projects." It’s no surprise that hardly any photos get posted here anymore.

We also don’t have a drainage channel.
However, there is a slope and a cavity underneath the slabs at the house.
Standing water is not supposed to occur, and that is not possible with this setup.

Also, it goes all the way to the gravel.
The whole thing is on compacted crushed stone.
We had done this six years ago already, and it’s still in great condition.
That’s why we did it again last year.
This is not uncommon here.

What’s strange about that? Paving is also laid on crushed stone and then filled with jointing sand...

I don’t find it strange either. Sand has the advantage that you can always re-sand the joints nicely later on.

Those gravel granules personally annoy me in our area.

The strange thing is that it was installed without a joint, so how is the sand supposed to get in?

@jucre45 Even if you're annoyed, it is definitely not normal to install porcelain tiles using a butt joint. Especially when someone points it out to you, you should accept the advice.
