Hello everyone,

quick question:

What do you think is a reasonable price per square meter for tile installation (labor including materials) excluding the tiles?

Our general contractor charges
for floor tiles in living areas (30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inches)) 80 € / sqm (about 72 sqm (775 sq ft)),
for utility room/garage 50 € / sqm (about 65 sqm (700 sq ft)), and
for bathrooms 90 € / sqm (floor and wall area about 65 sqm (700 sq ft)). Without tiles!

Honestly, I find that quite steep. What’s your opinion?

I see it differently. If the tiler is really skilled, they shouldn’t be any cheaper.

I also think the price is reasonable as it is.

I find the price quite steep! I’m familiar with around €30-40 per square meter, and even that seems quite high to me. There are areas where progress is relatively quick (floor/shower), but also those where it takes longer. However, if the installation cost is two or three times more expensive than the tile itself, something doesn’t seem right, does it?

To give you an idea of what a tiler cost me for a large tiled area: of course, like in your case, this is without materials, but my tiler also made a profit on the tiles themselves.

Just laying the tiles was €43 gross per square meter (approximately $46 per square yard) plus an €8.50 (about $9) surcharge for oversized tiles.
This does not include baseboards, grout, silicone joints, cleaning, transport, etc., so the total is €51.50 (around $55) per square meter just for laying the tiles.

I find your figures quite high, but I’m not building with a general contractor.

I also think it’s quite expensive. We paid about 55 euros, but that was for a size of 80x80cm (31.5x31.5 inches); 30x60cm (12x24 inches) would have been cheaper.

Best regards,
Sabine
