Hello everyone,

After the great help with the floor plan design (LINK) (thank you!), the floor plan is now fixed, and we are moving on to fine-tuning the window planning on the ground floor .
This is a so-called “linked house,” meaning no windows can be placed on the right side (basically like a semi-detached house). Therefore, it’s even more important to make optimal use of the available options.

Attached is the current plan. We are already quite satisfied with the windows on the north side (kitchen); they are about 80cm (31.5 inches) high horizontal windows, although suggestions for improvement are, of course, very welcome!

There is still room for improvement on the south side, but we just can’t find a good solution. The couch corner is important to us, as is the TV opposite it. However, this makes it difficult to position the windows optimally because having a TV right in front of a window is not ideal either. In the current proposal, we are concerned that the couch corner might end up too dark?!

We would be very grateful for any suggestions or ideas regarding the window layout.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Ground floor plan: Garage on the left, kitchen, living/dining area; south view of the house

while nowadays the box is mostly used as a multimedia Ambilight streaming device.
Then it wouldn’t matter where the TV is placed – but that was important to the original poster and part of the initial requirement.

I only meant that I see the times when the TV will be put back into the cabinet until the following Saturday as over, and instead, a permanently installed piece of furniture.

How terrible. Optical and acoustic pollution all day long.

Wow, great! Many thanks for the excellent suggestions and food for thought, including the topic of "mindful TV watching."

Starting from the end, we tend to be more of the “background TV” type. So solutions like a ceiling-mounted screen or a retractable/folding TV aren’t really an option for us. We also prefer a more classic setup in the couch area, with the sofa in the corner (open to the living space) and the TV on the opposite side.

But a question… in the kitchen both windows have a rough opening height of 80 cm (31 inches)… what would be the sill height? My gut feeling says that looks like a basement.

The sill height would be 1.25 m (4 feet 1 inch), and the two windows are currently planned with an 80x176 cm (31x69 inches) rough opening height. Our neighbors have similar windows, and it looked quite good to us. Having two different window sizes there seemed to create visual unrest at the front?! Or what would you suggest?

The fixed panes upstairs without a central mullion. I’ve seen that a few times in person and it looks great.

Awesome idea, thank you! It really looks much better, and it’s already ordered.

Or more in the direction of a townhouse style.

Thanks! Visually from the outside it’s great, but inside the TV placement becomes tricky again. We don’t really like the TV positioned dead center.

I would go for a large window front, not the patchwork of two different window sizes.

Yes, I think I’ll sketch that out and see how we feel about the symmetry left/right.

I find the window-door arrangement from post #1 well composed. I would align the two kitchen windows at the same height, as their symmetrical grouping on either side of the corner they frame essentially calls for it. In the kitchen, people usually want a view to stay connected with the surroundings while preparing a salad or watching for the mail carrier, rather than a panoramic view. Therefore, I prefer views there that comfortably sweep over the faucet.

Sorry for the silly question, I’m a bit confused. What does that mean exactly? Narrower but taller windows with a lower bottom height of the reveal (BHR)?
