Random pattern, no joke!
I’ve noticed for a while now that personal preferences, one’s own workmanship, and lack of knowledge influence how people judge others’ work.
Same here. I only really know my own job. But yes, I’m curious why he tiled it from top to bottom like that.
He would have had less work at least if he had done it the way you suggested. So your assessment can’t really be right, Tom. I’m looking forward to what he says.

Same here. I only know my own work, after all. But yes, I’m curious why he tiled it from top to bottom that way.
He would have at least had less effort if he had done it as you suggested. So your assessment probably isn’t correct, Tom. I’m curious what he has to say. And if not, then at least it’s level at the bottom, so the batten is even.

He had to drill holes, which is more work with porcelain stoneware. I also noticed the irregular pattern, but that’s a matter of taste—not mine—so that’s your choice. That’s just it: everything happening in the house now, assuming there are no construction errors, is purely a matter of personal preference.
@irregular pattern: From a craftsmanship perspective, for wood-look tiles in those dimensions, the only installation pattern available is the irregular pattern. That’s what Google told me.
When it comes to taste, there are no limits.
My brother-in-law had them installed in a running bond (staggered) pattern. After finishing two rooms, he got fed up and had the children’s room done in the irregular pattern.
It was done by an acquaintance with 5mm (0.2 inch) grout lines.
