ᐅ Which type of flooring is best for the ground floor – experiences?

Hello everyone,

My site manager called me yesterday regarding the basement, and the topic of the flooring on the ground floor came up again. He suggested that we might want to reconsider mixing both types of flooring, mainly because of the feeling of coldness but also for future renovations, especially in the living area.

We originally planned to have wood-look tiles throughout the entire ground floor. Everything has already been selected. In the photo, the tile is shown at the bottom, and the laminate is placed on top.

Now I have come up with the following idea. See the picture.

- Yellow is laminate
- Green is tile
- Blue is the island

And yes, I have ordered the kitchen exactly as planned :-p

What is your opinion on this mixed approach?

Modern kitchen with central island, dark countertop, cooktop, and storage compartments.

I’m bringing this up again so I don’t have to start a new thread...

I urgently needed to choose the flooring, and I found it quite difficult.

What was clear:
- Tiles only where necessary (bathrooms, utility room). I stayed once in a holiday apartment that was fully tiled, and I found that very uncomfortable.
- No laminate flooring for me.
- Carpet... actually not really either, since it’s too hard to keep clean.
- Genuine wooden planks were out of the budget, although I would have liked that.

So I considered vinyl, engineered wood flooring (parquet), and sheet vinyl. Recently, at a specialist store, I was also advised about cork flooring (as a click-lock plank option). Parquet was basically planned for the living room, but I’ve often heard complaints about the surface being very sensitive, with lots of dents and scratches... at least my parents are very unhappy with theirs.

In the end, I decided on cork flooring for the living room, children’s room, and bedroom, and planned vinyl for the kitchen, entrance area, and hallway. Then the plumber frowned and said cork would be a disaster with underfloor heating, and if he had known this, he would have installed an extra radiator in the living room...

So now I’m thoroughly confused again.

Has anyone installed cork flooring like this and can share their experience?

I had cork flooring in the basement room at my parents’ house. The hallway floor felt noticeably colder than in the room, so cork flooring probably provides good insulation. We didn’t have underfloor heating, but I could imagine that the heat doesn’t pass through as well... though I’m not an expert.
What do you have against laminate flooring?

Cork, don’t use it. It insulates too well. But you want a floor that conducts the heating warmth. K.

Cork is also much more sensitive than hardwood flooring.

It’s noisy, hard, and extremely cold underfoot. We had it in the bedroom once, and after just three steps, my feet felt like ice. No thanks.
Besides, the heating isn’t on all year round.

Supposedly, this is solved with this "cork parquet"? The cork itself isn’t on the surface but covered by a protective layer? I didn’t plan to install pure cork tiles, but rather a click system with a substrate and a cork intermediate layer.
