Hello everyone,

Today we removed the topsoil layer (see below). Now I would like to ask about the final steps I need to complete before sowing the lawn.

1. Loosen the compacted topsoil using a motorized tiller and remove any remaining stones/weeds.
2. Re-compact the topsoil using a lawn roller.
3. Lightly loosen the soil surface with a rake.
4. Sow the grass seed.

Would you agree with this procedure, or should I do something different?

I also have soil activator and fertilizer. Should I work these into the topsoil? If yes, when?

Is there anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance

Regards
Jörg

Plow. Then remove the stones. Then sow, lightly rake in the seeds, and roll. Do not fertilize yet. After germination and the first cut, apply Blaukorn.
What is a soil activator?

What is soil activator?

Should I roll the soil again after cultivating? So that the soil settles faster?

Soil activator is supposed to improve the soil structure. It’s called "Neudorff Terra Preta."

What do you think?

No, roll the soil after sowing, not before. Please sow the seeds into loosened soil, as they germinate and take root more easily. Roll the soil after sowing.
There is no need for a soil activator; soil fauna develop naturally through earthworms and similar organisms. Grass is a heavy nitrogen consumer, but to use nitrogen it first needs to grow; otherwise, the nitrogen just pollutes the environment as nitrate. For initial growth, germination, and shoot formation, your humus has enough nutrients.

You don’t need a soil activator; the soil fauna will develop naturally through earthworms and similar organisms. Grass is a real nitrogen consumer, but to use nitrogen, it first has to grow; otherwise, the nitrogen will just pollute the environment as nitrate. Your humus has enough energy for initial growth, germination, and shoot formation.

After tilling and rolling, I would gently loosen the soil again before sowing. The rolling after tilling is just so the soil settles more quickly again.

Should I fill the roller with sand after sowing? Or would that make it too heavy?

I have had the humus stored since last year, and there was an extreme amount of weeds on it. Are there still enough nutrients for the lawn, or do I need to add something anyway?

Thanks again for the great tips.
