Hello everyone,

We are planning a new build with approximately 190 sqm (2,045 sq ft), two stories, without a basement. The attic, about 65 sqm (700 sq ft), will be converted to include a bathroom and a storage room. The house will have a brick veneer exterior and will be built according to the energy-saving regulations. It is for a household of five people (2 adults + 3 children).
A mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery and KNX home automation are planned (if the budget allows, specifically for the KNX).
Once the house is completed, I would like to add solar thermal and photovoltaic systems after a few years.

I’m having trouble deciding between gas heating or a heat pump.

The gas connection costs me €2,500.

Could you help me make this decision?
And which manufacturer would you recommend?

Thanks!!!

Regards

The rooms themselves are as warm as usual. It took a little while to adjust the summer mode settings for temperature and hysteresis until it was right. Now we have a good compromise: the rooms are not colder than before, and the heating doesn’t have to run constantly. If you find it gets cold too quickly, you should adjust the settings a bit.

I just don’t really like tempering instead of heating... but to each their own...

Regarding the original topic, I also think air-to-water heat pumps can often be quite noisy... When I imagine several of these units installed on a 440m² (4,736ft²) property, it’s not something I find ideal. Ours is very quiet, but I have seen and heard others that were quite different... I wouldn’t want to hear the unit myself or have trouble with the neighbors...

Then your heating might need to turn off a little later. You have to find the right balance. It should only heat when necessary. As for the noise level, well, we were only offered heat pumps for indoor installation. The heat pump operates in the utility room and doesn’t bother anyone.

Indoor installation was not an option for me; I had heard that it can cause humming and other noises inside the house... but well, if that’s not the case for you...

A wood stove is completely uneconomical and, to me, falls under the category of luxury.
This statement might apply to people who have to buy firewood. Owning a private forest makes the cost balance very favorable. In addition, the efficiency depends heavily on the system. Wood gasifier? Masonry heater? Swedish stove? Fireplace stove? ...

Let me summarize. A stove or similar is just a nice-to-have for some.

Air-to-water heat pumps are now proven technology. They require relatively more space in the utility room. No solar thermal system is needed. No gas connection is required. When combined with underfloor heating and properly designed, they provide good heating performance at reasonable operating costs. Relatively expensive to purchase and not as durable as a gas boiler.

Gas heating requires a gas connection. This is not free but may be subsidized. It is proven technology, requires little space, delivers good heating performance even if the system is not perfectly planned, is easy to maintain, durable, and inexpensive to install. However, it has higher running costs, requires solar thermal as an additional expense, and relies on fossil fuel that produces CO2.
