ᐅ Is the real estate market increasingly forcing families to build their own homes?

Actually, we would prefer to avoid building. Unfortunately, existing properties within a 20 km (12 miles) radius have become quite expensive, and affordable rental houses with small gardens are simply scarce.

Until now, we have been living in an old rental apartment without a garden. We would like to change that, but there is a lack of options. The listings on various platforms are overcrowded with families looking for affordable housing.

Who is familiar with this situation, and how do you deal with it?

All this hype about plastic alone! […] More and more small packages are appearing on the market, […]. Or those terrible "squeeze pouches" with curd or fruit puree for children. Tea bags are individually wrapped again, coffee capsules, vegetables and fruit are wrapped individually. Is this really necessary?
No, it is not necessary. Do you have to buy it? No, you don’t.

When it comes to house construction, it continues. All the thermal insulation stuck onto the facade has to be produced somewhere and – even worse – eventually disposed of.
Exactly. And that partly explains why it’s so expensive.

Where there could be a real impact on climate protection would be air and sea travel as well as sea freight.
Exactly. The work on houses is often just a substitute action.

My mother-in-law had her house fully insulated with external thermal insulation about 10 years ago. It will never pay for itself; in some places there are already damages, green spots, and in other areas the plaster is peeling off.

I also believe that everyone should decide for themselves how energy efficient their house should be. After all, we pay enough for oil, gas, and electricity—each person should calculate for themselves what standard and consumption levels they are comfortable with.

No one forces you to retrofit the exterior insulation on an existing house. So that claim is nonsense.

And no, it is not acceptable that you regularly start an open fire in your house, polluting the whole environment and contributing to climate impact. Environmental protection is a public good that must be ensured by the government, because otherwise everyone would only think of themselves, acting at the expense of the planet. The government still needs to learn and improve, and perhaps avoid making pointless regulations. Fortunately, the next generation seems to be better prepared for this challenge.

Here is the next point: Everyone should have common sense and use it. Treat others the way you want to be treated yourself. Easier said than done. Many different perspectives come together here.

It has reached the point where politicians from the AfD portray 150 years of established physics as incorrect, and in doing so, they have been quite successful in attracting votes.

There is currently a noteworthy video on YouTube showing the AfD’s visit to the Fridays for Future demonstration in Berlin with Ms. Thunberg at the end of March, where participants (ranging from under 18 to over 65) were confronted with these allegedly false claims.
The reactions say it all.
That’s the problem when people only listen to themselves and see the world in terms of good and evil. The “good” are always themselves, and the “bad” are everyone else. A typical symptom seen in people with Asperger’s syndrome.

If you own one square kilometer of land, you obviously have very different possibilities. The neighbor is simply far away.

That’s exactly what I meant, Mr. Know-it-all. I’m talking about the middle of nowhere, whether in the USA or in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In Germany, there are ridiculously many regulations, no matter how large your property is.

That’s clear; although I really hope that existing houses won’t have to be retrofitted someday. I just wanted to say that external thermal insulation systems don’t last forever and sometimes need to be replaced after a relatively short time. More waste and especially more costs.

To be honest, I’m not really a fan of the protests either. Not all, but a good portion of those students probably just want a free morning off. The peer pressure plays a role – if you don’t join, you’re out of favor with classmates. But not all the students participating will genuinely engage with the topic. A few weeks ago, I accidentally walked into one of these protests and I can confirm what’s often said about them (probably also in casual conversations…): the kids use lots of cardboard and plastic cups, single-use PET bottles, and nearly everyone had a smartphone in hand. Are they really convinced by the cause? I find it unfortunate for those who genuinely want to make a difference. Now comes the usual casual debate, but couldn’t the protests be held on Saturday mornings? Or Friday afternoons? Or Monday afternoons? Even then, with enough participants, they could still send a strong message over time.
