ᐅ Lawn seeded, first beams in place, and what’s starting to grow there?

Hi,

I sowed my lawn on Friday, March 29th, after spreading fresh topsoil/lawn soil in the days before. While spreading the soil, I occasionally picked out some clover leaves (they were a nice, healthy green). I assume I didn’t get them all.

Anyway, now after just over a week, the first shoots are sprouting =)
That’s already encouraging.

What’s strange, though, is that the shoots are not coming from the seeds lying on the surface, but rather from those that were pushed slightly under the surface by the rake when spreading. The first week was very warm and dry, and despite watering 4–5 times a day by hand, the soil dried out repeatedly in between.

I assume that the surface seeds all died?

Also, sometimes two shoots grow from the same spot, meaning one sprout becomes two (see pictures)... Is that normal? Is this characteristic of a certain grass species?

And what is the two-leaved plant growing there? Could it be clover?

Oh, the seed mix is called "Classic Green Sport & Play Lawn."

It’s clear that I can’t completely remove all the weeds.

But I thought maybe you might know what this split blade of grass could be. Whether it’s normal or also a weed.

I only looked at it closely because I wanted to see how and if it grows. That’s when I noticed these things.

The seeds in the soil haven’t even developed roots yet. I only know that grass seeds are usually light germinators.

For testing purposes, I put 20 seeds into a salad bowl, covered it with paper towel, moistened it, added the seeds, and covered it with plastic wrap.
This way, you can clearly see how it grows and germinates, and how the roots spread across the paper towel.
Well, this test consistently has the perfect climate ;-)

So boredom after all ;-)

If it has two seed leaves, it’s not grass (grass is monocotyledonous) 😉

Remember: TWO seed leaves = WEED.
I don’t really like the word, and technically there’s no such thing as a weed, but as a professional, I have to keep it simple for non-experts 😀

Should I add that I recently picked up a few pots of dandelions from the garden center because I don’t have enough growing in my garden? Nah...

No, actually you should do that to check if the seeds are even viable.
You could save yourself the effort if nothing grows even with this method.
