ᐅ Overwhelmed by a basic kitchenette – does anyone have any ideas?

In the apartments for our guys, I have a straight wall with a length of 2.9 m (9.5 feet) where I want to install a small kitchen unit. Both kitchen units should be identical but mirrored in their layout. In one corner, a 24 kW tankless water heater needs to fit inside a base cabinet to supply both the kitchen and bathroom. This unit is approximately 45 cm (18 inches) high, 25 cm (10 inches) wide, and 10 cm (4 inches) deep.

The kitchen should include a sink with a small draining area, two cooking zones, a small oven with a microwave function, and a built-in refrigerator with a freezer compartment. A range hood can be omitted. The ceiling height in this area is 2.45 m (8 feet). It would be ideal to have the microwave device in a slightly taller cabinet at working height.

There should be enough space for basic cookware, dishes, cutlery, glasses, food supplies, waste, and some cleaning materials for the apartment. I’m only getting unsatisfactory results experimenting with pen and paper and curse both the Sweet 3D program and the Ikea online planner equally. Who has the time, interest, and passion to help me?

I also wash various items by hand; decorative plates, pans, baking molds... But for everyday dishes, I love the dishwasher. Especially with children, I assume that only items that can survive the dishwasher will be used in the kitchen anyway 😉 But that’s your decision. In the next few days, I will also start considering the kitchen units.

I get frustrated when my belongings are treated disrespectfully. Due to a lack of better self-management in this area, I’m eliminating one source of everyday annoyance.

But doesn’t it bother you if the guys stack dirty dishes in the sink and on the countertop in their new kitchens, only rinsing cups occasionally when needed? Or is there a cleaning service? (serious question – if a cleaner comes once a week to do a thorough cleaning and wash dishes, maybe it works)

And if the guys currently don’t manage to unload the dishwasher, do you think they will be able to wash all their dishes themselves later? You know your kids better, maybe they share your passion for hand washing 🙂

For heaven’s sake, I’m not trying to convince you to get a dishwasher. If it’s not wanted, then it’s not. But what do the guys think about it? Do they have particular preferences for the kitchen? What is the budget for the kitchen unit? Are there any color or surface finish preferences?

For two people, washing up immediately is not a big deal,

This requires the same willingness from person two 😉 Not everyone has that.

A friend takes the opposite approach and has two dishwashers in the kitchen. They are cheaper than a base cabinet, and he never has to unload clean dishes. One is dirty, one is clean.

I have thought about that too, because it is simply a consistent solution when thought through fully.

That was an answer to my question, but unfortunately I didn’t understand it… 🙁

No, each guy will have his own front door and can practice taking responsibility in their own household. It’s a different place, so I’m fine with that.
Of course, they will spend a lot of time in our part of the house—then our rules apply, no longer the shared ones.
There will be cleaning assistance, but probably not regularly for the guys. You can spoil someone too much. One gets along great, the other seems to have a strong aversion to any kind of free surfaces, including the floor.

The guys are looking forward to their apartment and their peace in their own space. They don’t expect a dishwasher and (so far) don’t have a special connection to the “kitchen as a living space.” An oven with a microwave, a refrigerator with a freezer compartment, one would like a breakfast bar with seating for two. The younger one prefers a “warm” style, while the older one is currently leaning more towards “industrial.” I think around 3000€ (about $3200) per kitchen should get us something suitable, maybe even less.
I consider assembling the kitchens together with the guys to be a good and meaningful activity.

Thanks for the input,
Max.

Would you really want to put a 1920s Art Deco silver teapot with ivory inlays in the dishwasher? A cast iron pan that rusts and leaves rust spots on every piece of cutlery? Repairing the dishwasher every two years because something is clogged again?
I understand that this is my shortcoming. However, I can fix it...

Um, no. But unsuitable items simply don’t go in there. Of course, if you have many things like that, it’s just not worth it. Still, I don’t understand the trouble you mention—do people around you really put cast iron cookware in the dishwasher??
