Topic: Electrical wiring—specifically the control of ceiling spotlights. We have the following situation:

We have an open-plan living/dining area with a kitchen of about 80 m² (860 ft²). This means we have several zones of ceiling spotlights. The living area, dining area, and kitchen are the main zones. For example, in the living area, we have divided the ceiling spotlights into two separate zones (this is due to the ceiling construction resulting from converting a barn into living space).

I will explain this using the example of the two zones of ceiling spotlights in the living area. These two zones should be controllable separately; for this, we have planned double rocker switches. By the way, all the ceiling spotlights should be dimmable. This one double rocker switch for the living area is located in three places within the large room. Now, we don’t want a dimmable double rocker switch but rather a dimmable double push-button switch. For this, ELTAKO units could have been installed in the distribution board (as far as I understand, being a layperson). We did not do this. Now there are surface-mounted ELTAKO units. The problem is that one would fit into a standard surface-mounted box, but according to the electrician, two would not. Can someone help us solve this problem? I hope I have explained this clearly enough. If not, please feel free to ask questions.

Hi wilsumer,
there is not enough information for this. For example, how many wires were used to connect the switch boxes to each other? Where are the outlets for the lights (both in one switch box or in separate ones)? It would be best to have this checked on site by an electrician, who can then tell you exactly what is possible and what is not. However, if your electrician (most likely the one who wired it) has already told you it won’t work, it is very likely to be correct since they know exactly how it was wired.

A NYM 3x2.5 cable was installed, meaning it has 3 cores. The branches for the lights are in a junction box. My electrician says he doesn’t know how to do it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible. That’s why I wanted to ask here.

At our construction site, several times a tradesperson said something couldn’t be done, and later it turned out it was possible. Don’t get me wrong, I have great respect for tradespeople, but they are only human after all.

What is the reason against retrofitting the required Eltakos in the electrical panel now?

No matter how you look at it, if you want to control multiple switches, you need a central location from which the dimming takes place.

In this case, the dimmer should be installed directly in front of the spotlights, where the control wires converge—not inside the flush-mounted boxes behind the switches.

According to my electrician, retrofitting this is not possible because
a) a cable with 5 conductors would have needed to be installed, and
b) we have no more space left in the distribution board.
