Those who have a legitimate increased need for security usually have money.
In our case, every burglar turns away when they see our CRT monitor. If it were known that I am an art collector, or belong to categories A and B of TV personalities, or were a member of a major corporate board, I would have a very different security requirement. Then spending $100,000 on the property fencing (without moving the house wall) and installing protective gates for the ground floor would not be unreasonable.
The whole setup is somewhat like a medieval castle. First line of defense (concrete fencing), courtyard = outer bailey, one entrance to the house, drawbridge.
