ᐅ Advantages and Disadvantages: External Venetian Blinds or Roller Shutters?

Hello!
We are considering whether to choose Venetian blinds or roller shutters.
Originally, I preferred roller shutters because they seem to offer better burglary protection. However, an architect advised us against this, saying that roller shutters can also be easily broken into. He believes that with almost the same level of burglary protection, Venetian blinds are much more comfortable and provide greater flexibility.
So far, we have only had roller shutters or interior blinds, so we lack direct comparisons.

Do you also think that roller shutters are not significantly "safer" than Venetian blinds?
Can you think of other pros and cons?

If the roller shutters need to stay up during strong wind, that’s a downside for us since we often have storms and frequently forget things

The retraction during wind can be automated.

Venetian blinds are indeed more vulnerable to wind, that is true, but roller shutters also need to be raised during a strong storm. At the latest, when hail occurs.

We also have two 2.60-meter (8.5-foot) wide venetian blinds! There’s no rattling or shaking at all, and the wind sensor is integrated into the control system. In my opinion, such a system only makes sense with proper controls. Additionally, we were able to connect several lighting controls through the same system.
We live in a very windy mountain location. The blinds would retract automatically at wind speeds from 14 m/s (31 mph). That's when the wind really starts to pick up, but it hasn’t happened so far.

We have traditional blinds on two windows, and of course, the colors need to match. However, they don’t offer any protection against break-ins. A strong person could probably force them open without much trouble.

Since venetian blinds need to be planned very early, especially if they are not to be visible from the outside when fully raised, we decided against using them on four windows back then due to budget reasons. At that time, we still felt like saving some money :P
That was actually the only mistake we’ve made so far: today, we would choose venetian blinds for all windows. They are simply great!
They provide shading without making the interior immediately dark. What’s the point of having big, beautiful windows if you always have to lower a blind? I find that really depressing!

So, from my side, a clear YES to venetian blinds (even though they are more expensive than traditional blinds) combined with proper control systems. We have Warema blinds fitted with the Climatronic control system. It also works via an app on our phones. Perfect for us!

We have venetian blinds everywhere and would definitely do it the same way again.
I used to sleep with roller shutters, but when you have children, it changes your perspective—you don’t want to wake up with sore skin^^
And when we’re tired, we sleep even if it’s not pitch dark at night, not to mention that with adjustable slats you can still make the room darker.

For aesthetic reasons, we decided against the Z-lamella and chose the S-lamella instead. In my opinion, it still provides enough darkness!

I initially planned to install roller shutters throughout the entire house as offered by the window manufacturer. On the ground floor, we have two patio doors/windows measuring 2.33m x 3m (7.6 ft x 9.8 ft) facing south, and two patio doors on the west side at 2.33m x 1.76m (7.6 ft x 5.8 ft). However, last summer I noticed that all the neighbors kept their shutters closed all the time, so the decision was easy. At least for these four openings, we had to install external venetian blinds. Since the budget is limited and we prefer to sleep in complete darkness, roller shutters were installed on the upper floor only. The problem then is the color selection, especially if you don’t choose an aluminum roller shutter slat. In that case, if you want a uniform look, the only option for the external blinds is white aluminum.

My window supplier mentioned that aluminum slats cost three times as much as standard roller shutter slats, but with them, you can get colors like RAL 7016, DB 703, or gray aluminum.

For summer, I would definitely recommend external venetian blinds on ground floor windows facing south or west, unless you want to live like a furnace (exaggerating) or turn on the lights with shutters closed.

I wouldn’t worry about burglary protection with windows rated RC2 or RC2N.
