Hello,

We bought two kids' rooms for €2,500. Unfortunately, I made a mistake while assembling one side panel of the loft bed. Now there is a hole in it.

Yesterday, I went to IKEA hoping to sort it out. After a heated discussion, they said it was my fault for not reading the assembly instructions properly and refused to replace the part. They said there are no spare parts available, and if I want a replacement, I have to buy the entire bed again!

I also spoke with the team leader, but there was no goodwill at all. Everything was handled with the IKEA customer card. I would even pay for the single part, but there’s zero chance.

I can’t get through to the hotline. What are your experiences with online support? Do they respond quickly? Are they accommodating?

Not at the IKEA Koblenz store.

Well, if you damage the bed during assembly, that is actually your responsibility. If the exact replacement part is not available individually, you will have to buy a whole new bed. Are you expecting Ikea to replace the bed for free as a goodwill gesture?

I would rather try sites like eBay Classifieds or similar. You might find a replacement part there at a reasonable price.

It can happen. (I would be annoyed too, especially with myself.)

P.S. Have you tried ordering the replacement part through Ikea’s spare parts order page? That might work better since you won’t be dealing with just one store.

Ikea Kaarst responded quickly and straightforwardly to our previous complaints. We bought quite a few things there and often received incomplete deliveries. The online service referred me back to the in-store service when I wanted to arrange something for a friend.

That can happen; don’t worry about it.

After a heated conversation…

That’s the second mistake. Usually, goodwill ends by this point. The person you’re dealing with won’t be willing to accommodate if the conversation gets heated.

That’s understandable. Ikea stocks spare parts like screws and fittings, but not full components. That would be too expensive. It would be easier for Ikea to simply give you a new bed, but they don’t want to do that.[/QUOTE]

Your expectation wasn’t that IKEA would take it back or give you a replacement part because of a user error, right?

You simply shouldn’t have told the truth that you messed up. Even if the package was “incomplete,” IKEA would have accepted the return.

Unfortunately, you should have lied, even though it’s morally questionable.

I hope you’re not serious!
