Hello,

In the secondhand house we bought, some light switches are not located where we would like them to be. Installing new junction boxes and running cables is not an option due to the effort involved. That’s why I’m looking for a wireless switch system, where a receiver relay is installed in the existing switch box and I can place a transmitter with a switch or push button at the desired new position.

There are some simple solutions available even in hardware stores, but I would prefer something Wi-Fi-based that can later be integrated into a home automation system. I want to use these switches to create a presence simulation. Is there a good overview of options somewhere, or can you recommend anything?

As a central controller, I’m considering a Raspberry Pi with appropriate software. I plan to tinker with it a bit in the future.

I use Sonoff (Tasmota), Xiaomi, and Shelly devices together with Openhab2 on a Raspberry Pi.

Without a central unit, I'm not sure, but via MQTT the battery-powered Xiaomi switch/motion sensor could potentially control the Shelly 1 in the "old" switch.

In this case, I would opt for Z-Wave.

Thanks! I've already looked into Sonoff/Tasmota in a different context. That would fit well. Let’s see if I can manage a switch/relay pair without a Raspberry Pi as the central unit for starters.

Enocean. Can later also be integrated with KNX. Battery-free wireless switch.

I can fully recommend the Shelly1 and Shelly2. They have a relay that can be controlled wirelessly and also an input for the traditional light switch, so you can use both. Exactly what you are looking for. Even more:

  • Fits inside a flush-mounted box behind a conventional light switch, allowing control via Wi-Fi or the old switch!
  • Direct 230V power supply
  • Works without a cloud service
  • Still functions without Wi-Fi connection when using the normal switch
  • Easily integrated with iobroker, openHAB, etc.
  • Supports MQTT and web access
  • For those who want it: manufacturer cloud and mobile app
  • Open source
  • Very affordable at around €10 or €20 (approx. $11 or $22) each

I installed them in my apartment for testing, and they work perfectly. No connection issues or anything similar, even though I have about 20 Wi-Fi networks from my neighbors in the building, which would normally cause interference.

In my renovation house, deep electrical boxes will be installed everywhere, with a Shelly device added where needed. A perfect solution for a low three-digit amount.

Anyone still spending the price of a small car on smart home wiring nowadays, I can only shake my head at that.
