Hello everyone,

I am looking for a way to detect if a key is left in the front door lock.

Background: My wife insists on unlocking the front door with a key and then regularly leaves it inserted from the outside. Our neighborhood is not the safest, and the car key is attached to it as well.

I want to make sure that the key is not left in the lock all night and that the home security system triggers an alarm if all the lights go out in the evening while a key is still in the lock. Does anyone have any ideas or know of a lock cylinder that can provide such a notification?

Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards

Take a look at IKON; they offer a variety of locking systems with key recognition.

When using traditional analog hardware door keys, it’s almost instinctive to remove the key from the lock after use, right? I find it hard to imagine how someone could unlearn that habit. It would be like stopping walking but leaving your foot hovering in the air after the last step, or getting out of the car at your destination but leaving the engine running. Nobody does that—what planet is your wife from?

It’s quite simple. My better half unlocks the door, leaves the key in the lock, goes into the hallway, takes off their shoes, and closes the door. Attentive readers have probably noticed – yes, the key remains in the lock from the outside.

I unlock the door, remove the key, close the door, and then take off my shoes.

A frequent point of contention is whether she could also remove the key right away in the future. It doesn’t always work… rather rarely.

Camera surveillance outside the front door area focusing on the lock cylinder and/or a key fob with an RFID chip along with the corresponding tracking. However, both require manual identification unless you program something for the RFID chip. I can’t imagine finding such a product ready-made, but with a bit of skill, you can quickly build it yourself.

The nearby chip (i.e., the key left inserted) would need to hold the latch (or catch) open so the door doesn’t fully close. Only when the key is removed does the latch engage—after that, the key can be reinserted from the inside since the locking action has already taken place. That’s just an example of how the logic could work; I don’t know of a ready-made product like this.

I suspect this comes down to early conditioning where the priority “don’t bring dirt inside” takes precedence over “locking the door,” which would probably require a sort of hypnotic override or reprogramming to change.
